PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Providence College needed an extra period to finish off Fairfield on Sunday, and Bo Martina supplied the answer with an overtime goal that gave the Friars a 4-3 field hockey win at Lennon Family Field.

The Friars jumped out fast in the noon start. Martina opened the scoring 8:19 into the game off a feed from Charlotte Lorden, and Florencia Talarico converted a penalty stroke at 11:35 to make it 2-0 after the first quarter.

Fairfield chipped away from there. Konni Hofmann scored unassisted at 23:08 to cut the lead in half before the break. Talarico struck again at 33:42, this time set up by Lily Procaccianti, to restore a two-goal cushion at 3-1.

The Stags would not go away. Catherine Fitzgerald scored at 42:47, and Camille Perlov tied the game 3-3 at 59:09 in the closing minutes of regulation. Providence challenged the tying goal, but it stood after review.

In overtime, Martina finished a pass from Johanna Mahner at 67:00 for her second goal of the afternoon and the win. It was a fitting finish on the day the program set aside to honor its seniors, and both Martina and Talarico ended the game with two goals apiece.

Providence had the better of the play early, taking five shots in the first quarter and none in the second, while Fairfield leaned on its attack late, firing 11 shots across the third and fourth quarters as it rallied. The Friars then took all five shots in the extra period.

Fairfield outshot Providence 15-13 and earned nine penalty corners to five for the Friars. Pauline Gineste made two saves in goal for Providence, while Georgia McDade stopped three shots for Fairfield. The game drew a crowd of 226.
