PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A 56-year-old man riding a moped was badly hurt Friday afternoon when he collided with a car at the corner of Broad and Moore streets in Providence, a city spokesperson said.

Police were called to the intersection at about 3 p.m. and found the injured rider there in serious condition. The rider needed CPR at the scene before he was taken for treatment, according to the spokesperson. No update on his condition had been released.

The Providence Police Department’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation. The driver of the car has not been identified, and police have not said what caused the crash or whether anyone will face charges or citations.

Officials have not released which hospital is treating the man or whether anyone else, including the driver, was injured. Investigators also have not said whether speed, impairment or the condition of the road played a part, and no arrests have been announced as of Friday night.

Riders on two wheels have had a rough stretch in the area. Rhode Island Department of Transportation figures show Providence County led Rhode Island in motorcycle deaths in 2025 with seven. Newport County had two and Kent County had one. The average age of those killed was 29, with victims as young as 22 and as old as 52. Friday’s crash on Broad Street is the latest in a run of serious moped and motorcycle wrecks across Rhode Island this year, and the Traffic Unit’s review of the collision at Moore Street was still open Friday night with no further details released.
