HAMDEN, Conn. — Fifth-ranked Providence College dropped a 5-1 decision at No. 10 Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon, as Bobcats forward Andon Cerbone scored three times at M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn.

Quinnipiac struck first when Cerbone found the net only 2:31 after the opening faceoff, with Dylan Edwards and Andrew Strathmann assisting. The Friars answered at 16:42 of the first period, when Andrew Centrella scored off passes from Tanner Adams and Logan Sawyer to send the game to intermission tied 1-1. That goal was the only one Providence could manage, as the Quinnipiac goaltender turned aside 30 shots over the afternoon.

The second period swung the game. Cerbone scored on a power play at 2:28, Antonin Verreault added a goal at 5:14, and Jack Stockfish converted another power play at 6:16 to put the hosts ahead 4-1. Cerbone completed his hat trick 34 seconds into the third period.

Special teams were the difference. Quinnipiac went 2 for 4 with the man advantage, while Providence finished 0 for 5 on its power plays, including two chances in the third period that failed to cut into the lead. Strathmann finished with two assists for the Bobcats.

Jack Parsons started in goal for the Friars, and Providence pulled him late in the third period for an extra attacker without finding a second goal. The noon game drew 2,718 fans.

Quinnipiac improved to 5-2 after a loss to Army the week before. The Bobcats next host Cornell on Friday, while the Friars return home to regroup after their first meeting of the season with one of the top programs in the region.
