Rhode Island Hospital
Rhode Island Hospital, located in Providence, is the state’s largest general acute care hospital and serves as its only Level I Trauma Center. Established in 1863, it has grown into a leading institution for patient care, medical education, and research.
The hospital’s foundation was laid in 1857 when Moses Brown Ives bequeathed funds to establish a medical facility in Rhode Island. The first patient was admitted in 1868. Over the years, the hospital expanded its services, including a children’s ward in 1877 and a nursing school in 1882. In 1915, Rhode Island Hospital became one of the first in the U.S. to utilize an EKG machine.
Since 1959, Rhode Island Hospital has been affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This partnership supports a strong environment for education, research, and training, positioning the hospital as a major academic medical center.
