Providence

On Friday night, Hasbro Children’s Hospital hosted its annual prom for teenagers living with chronic medical conditions at Hotel Providence. This special event, organized by the hospital’s Adolescent Leadership Council (TALC), provided a celebratory atmosphere designed to promote socialization and connection among teens facing health challenges.

The prom, themed “circus” this year, featured various entertainment options and catered food that the teenagers helped select during the planning process. Many attendees were treated to complimentary hair and makeup services, enhancing their overall prom experience. The event allowed these teens to engage in typical prom activities, like dining and dancing, while also discussing their hospital experiences in a supportive environment.

Erin Scott, a licensed clinical social worker involved with the event, stressed the significance of providing an uplifting space for adolescents as they navigate the complexities of healthcare. The event fosters camaraderie among participants, allowing them to connect with others who share similar life experiences without fear of judgment.

Attendees included Aby Houle, aged 17, and Autumn Lawrence, aged 19, who expressed their enthusiasm for this year’s prom, recalling fond memories from the previous event. Their excitement was echoed by Nicholas Cioe, who has lived with mitochondrial disease for several years and has been part of TALC for over two years, mentoring younger peers in the group.

The prom was designed to be inclusive, ensuring accessibility for all teenagers and their guests, regardless of health conditions. Parents shared how these gatherings significantly improve their children’s quality of life. For instance, Cher Gervais noted that her son, Ciaran Connell, 17, found a supportive community through TALC after his battle with a brain tumor.

The evening’s festivities included cultural elements such as performances by a ukulele band and Polynesian dancers, providing additional entertainment while enriching the cultural experience. Guests celebrated their resilience and victories, such as Matthew Beaudry, 17, who marked his triumph over brain cancer. The venue featured areas for mingling, including firepit spots and mocktail service, allowing attendees to socialize comfortably.

Overall, the prom at Hasbro Children’s Hospital serves as a vital outlet for teenagers, enabling them to embrace their individuality and forge connections with peers who understand their struggles. With an atmosphere focused on joy and celebration, the event successfully provides these young individuals with moments of normalcy and happiness amidst their health journeys.
