Emergency responders at the scene of a traffic accident in Providence

News Summary

A series of accidents in Providence led to two hospitalizations and displaced fourteen residents after a fire ignited in a home. Rhode Island State Police are investigating the incidents, which involved vehicular collisions and structural damage. The Red Cross is assisting those affected while authorities urge caution on local roads to enhance safety and prevent future accidents.

Providence: Multiple Accidents Leave Two Injured and Fourteen Displaced

Two people were hospitalized after a series of accidents in Providence on Monday, with one incident resulting in a fire that displaced fourteen residents. The incidents, which spanned various parts of the city, involved both vehicular collisions and a structural fire.

The first accident occurred at approximately 3:44 p.m. on Route 6 East near Dean Street, where a car was reportedly driving in the wrong direction. The collision resulted in one vehicle catching fire, and the unconscious driver was freed by firefighters after they extinguished the flames. Emergency services transported the hospitalized driver to the local medical facility. The Rhode Island State Police are conducting an investigation into this crash.

Following this incident, another significant event unfolded on Putnam Street, where a car accident led to a fire in a nearby home. The driver of this vehicle backed into the electrical meter outside the house, igniting flames that spread to the exterior wall and first floor of the structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection to this fire, but fourteen residents were displaced as a result. Rhode Island Energy crews responded by shutting off the power to the home to repair the damaged meter. Notably, the driver involved in this incident was absent when emergency services arrived, although two witnesses claimed to have seen the car leave the scene.

The Red Cross is currently providing assistance to the displaced residents affected by the fire.

Additional Accidents and Investigations

Meanwhile, around 11:15 p.m., another motorcycle accident took place at the intersection of Eddy Street and Georgia Avenue. A motorcyclist crashed into a fire truck that was responding to an emergency call and making a left turn. As it happened, the fire truck did not have its lights or siren activated at the time, which likely contributed to the collision. The motorcyclist sustained a broken foot and reported upper body pain, necessitating hospitalization.

In separate incidents, two Rhode Island State Police cruisers were rear-ended during a traffic stop on Route 10 around 10:15 p.m. One cruiser was pushed into another due to the severity of the impact. Two juveniles from the vehicle that struck the cruisers were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening. A state police trooper also sustained non-life-threatening injuries during this collision and was hospitalized. The driver responsible for this incident has been charged with DUI, reckless driving, and endangerment resulting in physical injury.

Authorities are still looking into the series of events leading up to the accidents, and more details may emerge as investigations progress.

Overview of Safety Measures

As these accidents highlight the ongoing safety concerns on Providence roads, officials are urging drivers to exercise caution and attentiveness to prevent further incidents. The Rhode Island State Police, along with local safety organizations, are expected to implement additional measures aimed at reducing traffic accidents and ensuring the safety of all motorists and pedestrians.

This hour’s events serve as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of traffic and the importance of road safety. The community is urged to stay alert and prioritize safe driving practices.
