Cumberland Farms gas station with electric vehicle chargers

News Summary

Cumberland Farms is set to acquire the Neon Marketplace gas station in North Providence, marking the fourth Cumberland Farms in the area. This transition is part of a strategic agreement by EG America, which will lease nine gas station locations across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The rebranding aims to enhance customer service and modernize amenities like electric vehicle charging stations while maintaining nearby operations. Concerns have been raised about market saturation in North Providence amidst this expansion.

North Providence – Cumberland Farms is set to take over the Neon Marketplace gas station at 1874 Mineral Spring Avenue in North Providence, with the conversion expected to occur within the next few weeks. This new Cumberland Farms location will become the fourth of its kind in North Providence, joining existing locations on Smith Street and two others on Mineral Spring Avenue.

The rebranding of the Neon Marketplace is part of a broader strategic agreement in which EG America will lease nine gas station locations from Neon Marketplace in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This expansion includes six sites in Rhode Island—specifically Portsmouth, Middletown, Warwick, North Providence, East Greenwich, and Providence—as well as three sites in Massachusetts located in Seekonk, Freetown, and Quincy.

This transition follows a press release issued by EG America on May 29, and it demonstrates the company’s commitment to enhancing its presence in the region while maintaining a loyal customer base in North Providence. As the rebranding is executed, there are currently no plans to shut down any nearby Cumberland Farms locations, indicating that operations in the area will remain stable.

EG America’s CEO emphasized the company’s dedication to strategic growth and improved guest service as they move forward with these changes. The gas stations being rebranded were originally constructed between 2020 and 2023, and they are equipped with modern amenities including electric vehicle charging stations and drive-thrus, which cater to the evolving needs of consumers.

The owner of a nearby BP gas station has expressed concerns regarding the potential oversaturation of gas stations in North Providence, likening the situation to that of coffee chains where multiple similar brands operate in close quarters. This brings into question the viability and market demand for additional gas stations in the area.

As the rebranding process is underway, it is anticipated that the store may experience brief closures during evening hours, but the overall operations of the store are expected to continue with minimal disruption. The planned conversion is designed to reflect EG America’s ongoing interest in expanding its footprint while reaffirming the quality and value of the locations being acquired from Neon Marketplace.

In summary, Cumberland Farms is taking significant steps to enhance its offerings in North Providence through the acquisition and rebranding of the Neon Marketplace gas station. This move is part of a larger strategy by EG America to solidify its presence in the Northeast and adapt to the preferences of modern consumers.
