Historical Significance and Ownership

The mansion was first owned by Matthew Watson and his son, Robert Watson. In the latter half of the 19th century, the property came under the ownership of Robert Brayton Knight, who was a co-founder of the well-known apparel brand, Fruit of the Loom. Established in 1851 in Rhode Island by Knight and his brother, Benjamin, the company started as the B.B. and R. Knight Corp. after acquiring Pontiac Mills. The brand name “Fruit of the Loom” was introduced shortly after in 1856, marking the beginning of a significant legacy in the textile industry.
