News Summary

Rhode Island entrepreneur Michelle Girasole has launched FreshMaps, an innovative app that allows users to explore the state’s historical sites through self-guided tours. In celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, the app features interactive maps, storytelling videos, and trivia challenges, making learning about local history engaging. A special promotion offers readers of What’s Up Newp a buy-one-get-one-free deal on Revolutionary Rhode Island History Hunts, encouraging community participation in this digital exploration.

Rhode Island is set to embrace its rich history in an engaging, modern way as local entrepreneur Michelle Girasole launches the FreshMaps app. This innovative self-guided, app-driven tour experience allows users of all ages to explore historical locations throughout the state as America gears up for its 250th anniversary. FreshMaps marks a pioneering step in digital historical exploration in Rhode Island, delivering interactive maps complemented by storytelling videos, trivia, and puzzle challenges.

The app aims to provide an exciting learning experience, where users can earn points and compete with friends while discovering the historical significance of various sites, whether they choose to walk or drive. The tours can be accessed year-round, giving participants the freedom to explore at their own pace and convenience.

Girasole, whose background lies in digital communications and a long-standing passion for local history, identified a significant opportunity in the tech landscape during the pandemic. This motivated her to partner with Barcelona-based Mooveteam to develop FreshMaps, bringing together her expertise and enthusiasm for Rhode Island’s history.

One of the app’s highlights is its collaboration with the Battle of Rhode Island Association to create “Revolutionary RI History Hunts.” These unique map-guided tours consist of ten well-crafted journeys that delve into Rhode Island’s pivotal contributions during the American Revolution. As part of the launch, FreshMaps is offering a limited-time buy-one-get-one-free promotion for What’s Up Newp readers. Each Revolutionary Rhode Island History Hunt costs $25, and users can obtain a second download at no additional cost by using the code WUN25 until the end of September.

Girasole also expressed appreciation for the support she received from a Rhode Island Commerce tourism grant, which has significantly aided in the development of FreshMaps. Plans for further community engagement are already underway. For example, a special event is scheduled on July 27, 2025, to celebrate General Nathanael Greene’s 283rd birthday, with Girasole as the featured speaker at the Gen. Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry, RI.

Additional events are taking place across the state, including the “Revolutionary RI History Hunt” event hosted by the Portsmouth Historic Society. This event is set for Saturday, running from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and requires pre-registration. Participants are encouraged to utilize a smartphone or tablet to navigate through the exciting historical journey. Furthermore, the Tiverton Farmers Market is organizing a “Thanksgiving Cranberry-Craze Farmers Market” on Sunday, featuring over 45 vendors showcasing cranberry-infused treats and other local products. The Aquidneck Community Table’s Growers Market also operates on Saturday mornings in Newport, offering a variety of local foods and artisanal products.

Lastly, the Portsmouth Free Public Library is preparing for its 23rd annual “Taste of Portsmouth” fundraising event on Friday. This event will showcase samples from local restaurants, wine, and beer, in addition to live auctions and raffle baskets. Tickets cost $30, and attendees must be 21 or older to participate.

As Rhode Island prepares for its 250th anniversary, the launch of FreshMaps promises to enhance the state’s connection to its history, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
