News Summary

Trinity Brewhouse, Rhode Island’s original brewpub, will be acquired by the team behind The Patio on Broadway. This marks a significant transition as founder Josh Miller steps back after 50 years of operation. The new owners, lifelong Rhode Island residents, aim to preserve the brewpub’s legacy while enhancing its offerings. As renovations begin in August, special events will be held to support local nonprofits, with plans to reopen in time for the fall season.

Providence, Rhode Island – Trinity Brewhouse, recognized as Rhode Island’s original brewpub, is set to be acquired this summer by the ownership team behind The Patio on Broadway. The acquisition marks a significant transition as the new owners are lifelong Rhode Island residents who have been avid supporters of Trinity Brewhouse.

The ownership transition follows 50 years of management by Josh Miller, Trinity’s founder and owner, who has deep roots in the Providence restaurant and hospitality scene. This year marks a milestone for Miller as it is the 50th anniversary of his first liquor license obtained at the age of 21 when he purchased the Met Café. Miller became the youngest individual to hold such a license in the city and has significantly impacted Rhode Island’s dining landscape over the years.

Opening its doors in 1994, Trinity Brewhouse quickly rose to prominence as one of the first two brewpubs in Rhode Island after the legalization of the brewpub model in 1994. The name “Trinity Brewhouse” was inspired by a collaboration with Trinity Repertory Theatre, symbolizing Miller’s family ties to the arts and the community.

Angel Winpenny, the owner of The Patio on Broadway, has expressed enthusiasm about integrating Trinity Brewhouse into their business family. Winpenny has committed to maintaining the name and the essence of Trinity while making updates to the space. The goal is to continue serving the high-quality craft beer for which Trinity is known.

Before closing for renovations in August, Trinity Brewhouse will host several special events and fundraisers aimed at supporting local nonprofits through the end of July. The revamped brewpub is expected to reopen in time to coincide with the arrival of Brown University Health to the nearby neighborhood and for the bustling fall season.

The transition of ownership ensures that Trinity Brewhouse’s current team will remain involved throughout the process. The new owners have expressed their intention to keep many of the long-standing staff members who have been integral to the Trinity family for decades. This approach aims to preserve the brewpub’s familiar environment while introducing new enhancements.

Earlier this year, Trinity Brewhouse was publicly marketed for sale at a price of $2.25 million before being acquired. Miller has articulated a desire to step back from the daily operations of running a restaurant, looking to take a more passive role in the business as he moves into a different stage of life.

The acquisition marks a notable chapter in the history of Trinity Brewhouse, a local cornerstone in the Rhode Island community, and assures patrons that its legacy will continue under the stewardship of experienced and passionate new owners dedicated to enhancing the brewpub experience.
