Trinity Repertory Company in Providence is temporarily closing its box office for extensive renovations aimed at enhancing community interaction and inclusivity. Customers can still purchase tickets online or in the lobby before shows. The renovation includes a public plaza and improved accessibility. While the Chace Theater is under construction, productions will be staged at the Dowling Theater, amid notable upcoming shows such as ‘A Christmas Carol’. A recent $10 million bond for local arts will support this renovation project.

Providence, R.I. – Trinity Repertory Company has announced the temporary closure of its box office as the building embarks on an extensive renovation project aimed at enhancing community engagement and inclusivity. Customers will still have the option to purchase or collect day-of tickets in the lobby starting two hours before show time. Additionally, tickets can be secured online through Trinity Rep’s website, or customers may contact the ticket office via phone or email for assistance.

The renovation, described as vital by Executive Director Katie Liberman, is part of Trinity Rep’s mission to reinvent the public square, creating spaces that foster interaction, engagement, and experimentation among local audiences. The planned developments will include significant exterior work, an expansion of the lobby, a modular redesign of the Chace Theatre, and the installation of a more functional elevator that will access all five floors of the building.

One of the notable transformations will involve converting Adrian Hall Way into a public plaza that will maintain the current pedestrian walkway and adjacent skate park, while removing the existing road vehicles currently use. Overall, the renovations are designed to enhance accessibility, providing better navigation for patrons within the building, which currently has 18 distinct “microlevels.”

While renovations are underway, all upcoming theatre productions will take place in the downstairs Dowling Theater. Notably, the company will stage its much-anticipated 49th annual production of “A Christmas Carol” at the Providence Performing Arts Center in 2024, returning to its home venue for the 2025 season. Upcoming productions include:

  • “Cold War Choir Practice” directed by Aileen Wen McGroddy, from September 4 to October 5, 2025
  • “A Christmas Carol” co-directed by Richard Jenkins and Sharon Jenkins, from November 6 to December 31, 2025
  • “The Roommate” by Jen Silverman, directed by Curt Columbus, from January 28 to February 5, and February 19 to March 19, 2026
  • “The Winter’s Tale” by William Shakespeare, directed by Ben Steinfeld, from February 12 to March 22, 2026
  • Other notable productions will feature a 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner and the Tony Award-winning “Next to Normal”, from May 28 to June 28, 2026.

For theater enthusiasts, five-play subscription packages will be available for renewing subscribers, with public sales commencing on May 29, 2025. A special subscriber price for “A Christmas Carol” has also been announced.

In a positive development for local arts, recent voter approval has resulted in a $10 million bond allocated for arts and culture, with Trinity Rep set to receive $2 million of this funding to aid in the renovation project. The enhancements to the building are being designed in collaboration with the Rhode Island Historic Preservation & Heritage Commission, ensuring that the renovations are both modern and respectful of the theater’s historic significance.

Construction is anticipated to kick off in early 2025, contingent on the completion of necessary approvals, with a targeted completion date set for fall 2026. During this period, all subscription plays will take place at the Dowling Theatre while ongoing developments on the Chace Theater are executed. Multiple sources have committed financial support to help realize the renovation goals, highlighting the community’s commitment to preserving and enhancing the cultural landscape.
