Joyce E. Stevens Gauvin, a cherished member of the Providence community, passed away peacefully at her home on September 4, 2025, at the age of 84. She had been bravely battling lymphoma in her final years. Joyce is remembered fondly as the beloved wife of Norman E. Gauvin and a significant figure in both her family and community.
Born in Providence, Joyce was the daughter of the late Albert A. Johnson, Sr. and Mary R. (Carrier) Johnson. She graduated from St. Xavier’s Academy and dedicated more than three decades of her professional life to New England Telephone Company, where she served as an Accounting Staff Manager. After retiring from the phone company, Joyce turned her career towards helping others by opening and operating the Electrology Center in North Providence for an impressive 13 years.
Family and Survivors
Joyce is survived by her husband, Norman, and a close-knit family that includes her brother Ronald W. Johnson, a retired firefighter, and his wife Jane, who reside in North Scituate. She also leaves behind her nephew Michael A. Johnson, who is a retired firefighter living in West Warwick, and niece Linda Johnson Rossini, along with her husband Anthony, who live in Florham Park, NJ. Joyce will also be missed by her grandnephew Christopher J. Rossini and grandniece Alyssa M. Rossini, both residing in Florham Park, NJ. Additionally, her sister-in-law, Madeline D. Johnson, lives in West Palm Beach, FL.
Joyce’s family legacy is further extended through Norman’s sons, Bruce D. Gauvin, a retired firefighter from Madison, AL, and Peter J. Gauvin of Greenville, RI, along with their respective families. She was predeceased by her brother Albert “Mooney” A. Johnson, Jr. and her niece Lauren M. Johnson. Joyce was also the former wife of the late Howard G. Stevens, a retired firefighter.
Services and Donations
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce is scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Augustine Church, located at 639 Mt. Pleasant Avenue in Providence. Following the service, burial will take place at St. Ann Cemetery. The family welcomes relatives and friends to attend the service and pay their respects to Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Joyce’s memory to St. Augustine Church at 20 Old Road, Providence, RI 02908.
