Born on April 18, 1930, in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, Charles was the son of William Gordon Jones and Frances (Marion) McFarland. He was married for 59 years to Janet M. Chase Jones (Jane) and is survived by two daughters, Deirdre A. Jones and Heather L. Jones, as well as four grandchildren: Owen Bjork, Kai Bjork, Bradford Arslan, and Liam Arslan. He outlived his beloved siblings, all of whom lived in the UK and also reached their nineties.
Medical Career
Jones graduated from Campbell College Preparatory School in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and traveled extensively after joining the British Merchant Marines in 1947. His maritime adventures with the Blue Funnel Line allowed him to visit major ports in the Far East until 1949. After his seafaring career, he pursued pre-med studies at Trinity College, University of Dublin, where he graduated from medical school in June 1957.
Following his graduation, Charles moved to the United States to complete a residency at Graystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morristown, NJ, for two years. Deciding that psychiatry was not his calling, he transferred to a residency in internal medicine at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut. He later interned at Rhode Island Hospital and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Lahey Clinic in Boston.
In 1963, Charles joined a practice of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston, RI, where he dedicated 20 years of his career. Later, he became Vice President and Head Medical Director at Metropolitan Life Insurance in New England, continuing until his retirement in 1998. Throughout his career, he was affectionately known as “Charlie” or “Doc” by his patients and colleagues, and “Derrie” to his close friends.
Retirement and Personal Life
In retirement, Charles enjoyed spending quality time with family and indulged in hobbies that included beach activities, tennis, and social dancing. He was a founding member of the Dunes Club and actively participated in country western dancing several nights a week. Additionally, he was a passionate jazz enthusiast and enjoyed outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and bird-watching.
Charles took great pride in his gardening skills, particularly for his tomatoes and impatiens. Known for his wit, conversational skills, dry humor, and storytelling abilities, he cherished his 59 years of adventure-filled marriage with his artistic wife, Jane.
