Rhode Island—A data breach at Brightstar Global Solutions Corp, previously known as International Game Technology (IGT), has exposed the personal information of more than 6,300 residents in Rhode Island. The breach was disclosed to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office in a notification letter dated October 3, 2025, following an unauthorized access of Brightstar’s internal systems on November 17, 2024.

In total, the breach affected 103,879 individuals, with 6,354 of those residing in Rhode Island. The compromised data includes sensitive information such as names, contact information, dates of birth, government identification documents, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, health data, and financial account details. The majority of those impacted were current and former employees of Brightstar.

Although Brightstar has reported the breach, the company stated that it is not aware of any instances of misuse of the compromised personal information. As a response to the incident, Brightstar is offering 24 months of credit monitoring, fraud detection, and dark web monitoring services to those affected. Notification letters will be sent out to all individuals whose information was compromised.

The investigation concerning the breach concluded on August 21, 2025, confirming that the compromised data was primarily maintained by IGT, which was collaborating with Brightstar at the time of the breach. In compliance with state regulations, the company reported the breach within the mandated 45-day period following its confirmation.

In response to the incident, Brightstar has implemented enhanced security measures to fortify its defenses against potential future breaches. The global lottery division of Brightstar was rebranded in June 2024 following the acquisition of IGT by Apollo Global Management. Nevertheless, Brightstar continues to meet its contractual agreements with the Rhode Island Lottery, which includes providing technology for lottery and gambling operations.

The breach did not only affect Rhode Island residents; it also impacted individuals in Massachusetts and Connecticut, with nearly 1,500 and more than 550 residents affected, respectively. However, the Rhode Island Lottery has not released any statements regarding the incident at this time.

Data breaches pose significant risks to both individuals and organizations, leading to potential identity theft and financial fraud. Brightstar’s response, including the provision of free credit monitoring services, aims to mitigate the risks for those impacted by this incident, while the company works to rebuild trust and enhance its security protocols in the wake of this significant data breach.
