Keene Celebrates as Women’s Golf Team Takes Home Championship Title

In a thrilling showdown on Saturday, October 7, the Keene State women’s golf team made history by winning the inaugural Little East Conference Women’s Golf Championship. The championship took place at the gorgeous Valley Country Club in Warwick, Rhode Island, hosted by Rhode Island College. The excitement was palpable as the Owls rallied to seize victory, showcasing determination and skill on the greens.

A Remarkable Comeback

The tournament unfolded with the Owls trailing behind Husson University by six strokes after the first round. However, they turned up the heat on the second day, improving their team score by an impressive 11 strokes. With a final team score of 359, Keene State broke their own program record for best team score by just one stroke, sealing their championship win.

The Competition

In the end, the Eagles from Husson University finished in a commendable second place, falling short by five strokes. The University of Southern Maine rounded out the top three teams, showcasing the competitive spirit of the championship.

Spotlight on Stellar Performances

The success of the Keene State team can be attributed to the standout performances from players like junior Madison Mousley and sophomore Mackenzie Hagearty. Both athletes displayed incredible focus, parring the final two holes to help secure the victory. Mousley, in particular, made a significant jump in performance, finishing the second day with a score of 84—a three-stroke improvement over her first round. With this solid performance, she climbed to second on the leaderboard, closing the gap on the medalist from the University of Southern Maine.

Highlighting Future Talents

Freshman sensation Sadie Murray, recently honored as the LEC Rookie of the Year, showcased her skills as well, finishing in fourth place with a total score of 176 after rounds of 91-85. Her impressive back-to-back birdies on the par-4 10th and par-3 12th were a testament to her bright future in the sport.

Consistent Excellence

To further underline their prowess, it’s worth noting that Keene State accumulated a total of nine birdies throughout the tournament—six more than Husson University. Sophomore Abby Weiterman contributed to this impressive number with four birdies, including a standout performance on the 102-yard par-three 12th hole.

A Historic Season

Keene State’s head coach, Jeff Timmer, praised the team for their exceptional performance, noting that it was one of their best scores collectively. He expressed immense pride in the players, calling this season a historic one, filled with team records set and numerous goals accomplished.

A Bright Outlook

This victory marks a significant improvement for the Owls, who have consistently shot below 370 as a team throughout the season. Both Mousley and Murray earned All-Little East First Team selections for their outstanding contributions, while Weiterman was recognized on the LEC Second Team. It’s a new dawn for Keene State’s women’s golf as they celebrate their inaugural championship win and continue to aim high for the future.
