Barrington, RI – Barbara Dessel Genetti, a beloved member of the Barrington community, passed away at the age of 71 on October 23, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with ALS. She died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family.
Known for her warm and joyful spirit, Barbara was often described as larger than life, despite her petite stature. Her compassionate nature and infectious smile endeared her to everyone she met, and she built lasting friendships throughout her lifetime.
Born in New Haven, CT, Barbara was the daughter of the late Arnold and Florian O’Donnell Dessel. In 1964, her family moved to Barrington, RI, where Barbara would come to flourish. She graduated from Barrington High School (BHS) in 1972 and later pursued higher education at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.
Barbara had a vibrant career in the restaurant industry, beginning at a young age. She founded the restaurant Bullocks in Warren, RI, before partnering with her best friend, Terri McCarron, to open Tastebuds on the East Side of Providence. It was here that she also met her future husband, Michael Genetti. However, after starting a family, Barbara shifted her focus toward community and home life.
During this time, she worked as a special education assistant at Primrose Hill School and volunteered extensively with Tap-In, an organization dedicated to helping families in need. Barbara was also actively involved in her children’s school and athletic activities, showcasing her dedication to her family and community.
Cooking was a passion for Barbara, and she cherished hosting Sunday dinners and family holidays. In 2009, she returned to the restaurant industry by partnering with her brother to open Billy’s in Barrington, which she considered one of her proudest achievements. Barbara eventually took over ownership of Billy’s in 2016 and worked alongside her sister to create a welcoming and lively environment that reflected her love for people.
Her family includes her husband of 37 years, Michael Genetti, and their children: Drew and Erin Genetti, Casie and Leighton Culici, and Sarah Genetti. Barbara found immense joy in her five grandchildren: Hayden, Avery, Finley Genetti, and Cameron and Collins Culici. Her family was the centerpiece of her life, and her love for them was evident in everything she did.
Barbara’s surviving family extends to her sisters, Joan and Richard Abrams, Elaine and Peter Hess, and Paula and Dennis Lyons; her brother, Bill Dessel; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and their children. The memories and connections she nurtured will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
Funeral arrangements are being managed by Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, located at 8 Schoolhouse Rd, Warren, RI. A service for reflection and remembrance will be held on October 30, 2025, at 10 AM at Barrington Congregational Church, followed by a celebration of life in honor of Barbara’s legacy.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to make donations to Compassionate Care ALS, PO Box 1052, West Falmouth, MA 02574, to support efforts towards ALS research and care.
