A Legacy Built on Love and Dedication
Family was everything to Ira, who was a devoted husband to Fae (Tilley) Murphy. Their tale began at the University of Rhode Island (URI), where they met and started a beautiful journey together, culminating in marriage on December 29, 1951. The couple’s love only grew stronger as they welcomed four wonderful children into their lives: Deborah Hammersley (Robert), Katherine Ancona (Frank), Andrew (Debra), and Stephen (Karen). Their family tree flourished with the addition of twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, ensuring that Ira’s legacy will continue for generations to come.
Accomplishments That Inspire
Ira’s childhood was spent in Ashaway, where he graduated from Westerly High School in 1947, leaving his mark as Class President and a standout athlete. Ira was not only a three-sports athlete but also earned a spot in the Westerly High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He later ventured to URI, where he graduated with a degree in Engineering in 1951.
An athlete at heart, Ira showcased his talents on the baseball diamond, playing center field for four years before serving as co-captain. He was also deeply involved in the fraternity life, leading as president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and being honored with induction into Sachems, the Campus Honor Society.
A Life of Service
Ira’s commitment to service continued beyond his collegiate years. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2LT through ROTC and served two years of active duty as an Industrial Engineering Officer at the Philadelphia Army Depot. His military career continued for over three decades with the U.S. Army Reserves, from which he would retire as a Colonel in the Military Intelligence Branch.
Back in civilian life, Ira dedicated 37 years to the manufacturing industry with roles at the Steel Strapping Division of Stanley Works and at Acme Steel Co. before finally retiring in 1990. After retirement, he settled in Jamestown, where he embraced the beauty of his surroundings.
Community and Family First
Active in his community, Ira held a significant role in the Episcopal Church, serving as warden, vestryman, and lay reader for an impressive 33 years while participating in numerous parish committees. He also proudly donated 16 gallons of blood and was a cherished member of the Jamestown Lions Club, always finding ways to uplift those around him.
When not volunteering or spending time with his family, Ira indulged in his hobbies, such as cultivating gorgeous roses, enjoying leisurely days on the golf course, fishing, and soaking in the serene life by the bay.

Ira leaves behind a loving family and countless friends who will deeply miss him. Preceded in death by his sister Susan and brother-in-law Arthur Coy, his spirit will live on in the hearts he touched.
