News Summary

Attorney Jonathan Einhorn has surrendered his law license following allegations of misconduct at a detention center. Accused of passing contraband to inmates, Einhorn faces significant legal consequences after a forensic investigation revealed he conveyed synthetic cannabinoids. Under a Deferred Prosecution Agreement, Einhorn will not renew his license for at least ten years, though he may apply for reinstatement at age 85. This case highlights the ethical responsibilities of legal professionals within the justice system.

New Haven, Connecticut — Attorney Jonathan Einhorn, 75, has officially surrendered his license to practice law following a serious ethical violation concerning his conduct at a detention center. The New Haven lawyer was entangled in legal issues after allegedly lying to corrections officers regarding the conveyance of contraband to detainees at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

In 2023, during a visit to the detention facility, Einhorn was required to sign a document indicating his understanding that it is prohibited to bring any contraband or items to the detainees. When asked by a corrections officer if he intended to pass anything to inmates during this visit, Einhorn deceptively answered, “No, not today.” However, evidence later surfaced showing that he had indeed passed paperwork to at least two detainees during the visit.

Upon further investigation, one of these documents was found to be notably discolored and heavily stained. Forensic testing by the FBI determined that the stained paperwork contained synthetic cannabinoids, classified as a Schedule I controlled substance. This breach of federal law led to a significant legal consequence for Einhorn.

In response to the charges, Einhorn entered a Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. This agreement entails that he will not seek to renew his law license for a minimum of 10 years. Moreover, as part of the agreement, if Einhorn complies with its stipulations over the next 18 months, the federal charges against him may eventually be dismissed. The case against him included charges of making materially false statements under federal jurisdiction, with Einhorn acknowledging that sufficient evidence exists for a conviction on these charges.

The investigation was led by the Wyatt Detention Center’s Professional Standards Unit in conjunction with the FBI, highlighting the stringent measures taken to address contraband issues within detention facilities. Einhorn’s past as an attorney spans over 30 years, during which he built a reputation not only in law but also as a participant in sports car racing events across New England.

Despite the gravity of his situation, Einhorn’s legal career is not entirely closed off. Upon reaching the age of 85, he may be eligible to apply for the reinstatement of his law license, provided he meets any necessary requirements set forth by the state bar and ongoing legal standards.

This case has attracted attention due to the intersection of legal ethics and criminality, serving as a reminder of the critical responsibilities attorneys have when interacting with the justice system and correctional facilities. Einhorn’s surrender of his law license underscores the implications of violating both legal norms and the trust vested in legal professionals.

The ramifications of this incident extend beyond Einhorn, potentially impacting the broader community’s perception of legal practitioners and the integrity of the legal system, particularly regarding the prevention of contraband in detention centers.
