“Back to the Future: The Musical” will be staged at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) from June 10 to June 15, 2025. The adaptation of the famed 1985 film is anticipated to attract a wide audience with its mix of nostalgia and modern theatrical flair. Known for its groundbreaking storyline and beloved characters, the musical promises to bring the classic tale of time travel to life in an exciting new way.
To bolster excitement around the show, there will be a trivia competition named “Backwards Kirby Kwiz”, hosted by local personalities Will, Audrey, and Brendan Kirby. This event aims to engage both fans of the film and first-time attendees alike, creating an interactive atmosphere that ties into the show’s theme of time-travel hijinks.
Among the talent featured is Zan Berube, who portrays Lorraine McFly. As a native of the area, Berube expresses that performing in her hometown is a significant milestone in her career. Her character undergoes a fascinating transformation, shifting from a troubled 47-year-old to a curious 17-year-old, which allows for a unique exploration of youth and possibilities.
The musical adaptation is backed by the original creators of the film, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, ensuring that the essence of the story remains intact. It debuted to great acclaim, winning the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical and securing multiple WhatsOnStage Awards.
The narrative revolves around Marty McFly, a teenager who inadvertently travels back to 1955 in a DeLorean crafted by his friend, Doc Brown. Marty faces the challenge of ensuring his parents meet and fall in love to secure his own existence. The show retains several iconic songs from the original movie like “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode”, and it also features new music created by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard.
This production is characterized by its technical innovations, including a life-size DeLorean prop designed for the stage, complemented by a special deck for enhanced technical effects. To add to the fan experience, audiences will have the opportunity to take pictures with the DeLorean, which will be available outside PPAC before performances, pending weather conditions.
The show’s cast includes seasoned performers such as David Josefsberg as Doc Brown, Lucas Hallauer as Marty McFly, and Nathaniel Hackmann as Biff Tannen. The production is helmed by acclaimed director John Rando and features a creative team with several awards to their names, reflecting a high standard of artistry in this venture.
The musical has garnered attention with various regional productions planned and aims for international expansion, with upcoming openings in Sydney and a debut aboard a cruise ship. Tickets are currently available through PPAC, with group sales options for parties of ten or more, encouraging a community-wide turnout for this unique theatrical experience.
Fans of the film and newcomers alike are encouraged to attend as “Back to the Future: The Musical” promises not only to honor the beloved original but also to add a fresh layer of excitement and entertainment to its timeless story.
