The captivating stage design of Blues for an Alabama Sky reflects the essence of 1930s Harlem.
The Trinity Repertory Company presents its season finale with ‘Blues for an Alabama Sky,’ a poignant reflection on life in 1930s Harlem. The play follows the struggles of Angel, a blues singer navigating personal losses while seeking support from friends amidst societal challenges. The production, directed by Jackie Davis, addresses complex themes like misogyny, racism, and personal agency, drawing in audiences until June 29.
Providence, RI – The Trinity Repertory Company has launched its season finale production titled “Blues for an Alabama Sky,” captivating audiences with polished performances and exquisite set design. Set in Harlem during the 1930s, the story unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of the Great Depression, showcasing the struggles and aspirations of its characters.
The central character is Angel, portrayed by Cloteal L. Horne, a blues singer facing significant personal losses — her job, her lover, and her apartment. As Angel navigates this challenging period, she receives support from her friend, Guy, an openly gay fashion designer played by Taavon Gamble. Guy opens his apartment to Angel, allowing her a temporary refuge while she looks for new singing opportunities.
Besides Angel and Guy, the production features Delia, played by Meagan Dilworth, who aspires to establish a family planning clinic in the community, and Sam, a friendly but disinterested doctor portrayed by Dereks Thomas. The story introduces Leland, a newcomer from the South who becomes Angel’s romantic interest. As Angel becomes infatuated with Leland, she views him as a glimmer of hope to escape her dire situation.
Leland, however, comes with his own baggage—a tragic past that involves the loss of his wife and child during childbirth. This dynamic adds depth to their relationship, emphasizing themes of love and desperation.
The production’s direction by Jackie Davis creates a world filled with seduction, danger, and heartbreak, enhancing the storytelling. Cloteal L. Horne’s portrayal of Angel is described as mesmerizing, skillfully conveying the character’s insecurity and desperation. Taavon Gamble’s performance as Guy exudes charm and humor, marked by an underlying tension towards Angel, which adds complexity to their friendship. Meagan Dilworth’s Delia is characterized as sympathetic and appealing, particularly in her interactions with Sam.
“Blues for an Alabama Sky” tackles profound societal issues such as birth control, homophobia, misogyny, racism, and the challenges faced by black women in securing job opportunities. However, the first act has faced criticism for its length, clocking in at 90 minutes without significant plot development. The second act shifts gears, gaining momentum as Angel becomes pregnant by Leland, leading to a marriage proposal that she initially accepts despite her lack of love for him.
A pivotal moment occurs when Angel discloses she had an abortion, provoking a violent reaction from Leland. This act underscores the play’s exploration of personal agency and societal expectations. Ultimately, the conclusion of the play lacks resolution, leaving the audience with a sense of ambiguity regarding Angel’s fate and actions, which are viewed as contemptible and devoid of remorse. Additionally, the character of Delia is deprived of an opportunity for confrontation with Angel, preventing an emotional expression of grief and betrayal.
The production of “Blues for an Alabama Sky” runs through June 29 at the Trinity Repertory Company, located at 201 Washington St., Providence. The performance has a total runtime of three hours, including one intermission. Tickets can be purchased by calling 401-351-4242 or visiting the company’s website.
