The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will showcase “Spano Conducts Brahms’ Requiem” on Saturday, May 10, starting at 7:30 PM at The VETS in Providence, Rhode Island. Under the direction of acclaimed conductor Robert Spano, this concert will feature prominent soloists such as soprano Jessica Rivera and baritone Will Liverman, alongside the Providence Singers, directed by Christine Noel.
This concert is part of the TACO Classical Series, which aims to bring exceptional classical music to local audiences. The evening’s program will include three significant works: Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis,” Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” and Brahms’ “A German Requiem.” Each piece presents a unique exploration of themes ranging from childhood nostalgia to spiritual solace.
Additionally, an Open Rehearsal is scheduled for Friday, May 9, at 5:30 PM at The VETS, allowing the public a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation involved in bringing the concert to life.
Robert Spano is a globally recognized conductor known for his intense artistry and ability to engage audiences. He has served as the Principal Conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra since August 2022, having previously held the position of Principal Guest Conductor there starting in 2019.
Soprano Jessica Rivera has earned accolades for her vocal talent and has worked with notable composers and conductors throughout her career. Baritone Will Liverman has gained recognition for his versatility and artistry, receiving the Beverly Sills Artist Award from The Metropolitan Opera in 2022.
Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” is celebrated for its richly textured compositions and was originally created for a double string orchestra and solo string quartet. Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” is a poignant piece that encapsulates the innocence of childhood, inspired by themes from James Agee’s novel. Brahms’ “A German Requiem” is particularly distinctive for its seven movements, focusing on comfort for those left behind, rather than a traditional prayer for the deceased. This work utilizes German biblical texts instead of the customary Catholic Latin texts, adding to its unique character.
Tickets for the concert and subscription plans are available for purchase through the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra’s official ticketing site. Subscriptions provide various benefits, including pricing advantages, the best seating options, and concert attendance flexibility. The Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School also offers educational opportunities for residents of diverse backgrounds, helping to foster a love for music across the community.
