The Choreography Project has officially announced its 2025 cohort members, who will be performing in the annual performance series scheduled for August 24, 2025, at the Hope High School Auditorium in Providence. This event will showcase original works from the cohort, each guided by nationally acclaimed choreographic mentors, highlighting a diverse array of talent in the dance landscape.
The 2025 cohort features a range of artists who bring unique backgrounds and perspectives to the stage. Among them is Simon Montalvo, a Boston-based non-binary movement artist known for integrating dance theatre and improvisation with community engagement. Their approach is innovative and reflects a modern interpretation of dance as both an art form and a medium for social interaction.
Hannah Franz, another cohort member, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Adelphi University and currently dances with Partnering Lab. Her versatility as a choreographer and performer allows her to explore various styles and narratives in her work.
Ava Grebe hails from Maryland and is a recent graduate of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. She is currently focusing on choreography as part of her professional residency, bringing fresh ideas and techniques to the project.
Also part of this year’s cohort is Alyah Baker, who serves as an assistant professor of dance at UNC Charlotte. Baker is renowned for her work at the intersection of dance and embodied activism, highlighting her commitment to social change through the art form. She is the founder of AB Contemporary Dance.
Deanna Gerde, who has previously performed with Newport Contemporary Ballet, returns to the Choreography Project following a successful debut in 2023. Her continued involvement indicates the project’s ability to nurture talent and foster growth within the dance community.
Lastly, Nina Yoshida-Webster, a newcomer to the project, currently performs with Ballet RI and has a rich background of experience with various notable organizations. Her participation adds another layer of depth to the cohort’s varied skill sets.
The Choreography Project’s mission is to amplify artists of marginalized genders and to promote the creation of new dance works that represent diverse perspectives. By providing funding, mentorship, and performance opportunities, the project seeks to foster an inclusive environment that encourages artistic expression and innovation.
The upcoming 2025 performance promises to deliver bold movement, compelling ideas, and a rich tapestry of diverse perspectives. It aims to captivate audiences and elevate important conversations through dance. Each artist will present original works that reflect their individual journeys and insights, alongside the collaborative efforts of their peers.
Since its inception, the Choreography Project has dedicated itself to fostering a supportive community for dancers and choreographers. Its annual performance series has become a platform for emerging artists and seasoned professionals alike to present their work in a collaborative environment. This initiative has gained recognition for its commitment to presenting innovative dance that resonates with contemporary issues and themes.
