His contributions to the architectural field and his commitment to community service have left a lasting impact on many lives across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and beyond.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, Varone was a proud graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Johnson & Wales University (JWU). He established a successful career in architecture and project management, notably contributing to the development of Johnson & Wales University. During his tenure at Cushman & Wakefield, Varone led significant projects, including the construction of the Citizens Bank headquarters in Johnston, Rhode Island.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Varone was deeply committed to philanthropy and community service throughout his life. He dedicated his time to coaching youth sports for his sons and volunteered for numerous community activities. Varone was also a regular blood donor and participated in various philanthropic initiatives. For 14 years, he served on the board of Caritas Smile, an organization focused on aiding communities in need both locally and in the Dominican Republic.
Varone is survived by his partner, Sixcia Devine, and her son, John Daniel Devine. He is also survived by his sons, Nicholas A. Varone and his late son, Michael T. Varone. His mother, Janice (Pezzullo) Varone, and his father, Richard T. Varone, who predeceased him, complete his immediate family. Additionally, he leaves behind three sisters: Allison Johnson, Kristen Sorensen (married to David Sorensen), and Tracey MacEachern (married to David MacEachern), along with cherished nieces and nephews.
The legacy of David Varone is one of dedication, leadership, and compassion. He played a significant role in numerous projects that improved the community while his philanthropic efforts helped uplift those in need.
Visitation and Services
Visitation for David Varone will be held on September 9, 2025, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Nardolillo Funeral Home in Cranston, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for September 10, 2025, at 10 AM at Holy Apostles Church in Cranston, RI. Following the mass, burial will take place at St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston, RI.
