Rhode Island – Dominick Ruggerio, the longest-serving legislator in Rhode Island’s history, passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 76. Ruggerio, who had a remarkable political career spanning nearly 44 years, was serving as the president of the Rhode Island Senate at the time of his death. He represented District 4, which includes parts of North Providence and Providence, and had been receiving treatment for cancer, leading to a hospitalization the week before his passing.

In November 2024, Ruggerio was re-elected to the Senate even after publicly announcing his cancer treatment earlier that year. His commitment to public service was acknowledged by Governor Dan McKee, who described Ruggerio as “a great friend and true public servant” and highlighted his focus on enhancing the lives of working families and boosting Rhode Island’s economy. In honor of his memory, flags across the state were ordered to be flown at half-staff.

United States Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse also expressed their condolences, with Reed specifically reflecting on Ruggerio’s dedication to Rhode Island residents and his impactful contributions over his decades-long career.

Political Career and Achievements

Ruggerio was first elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1980, where he served two consecutive terms before transitioning to the Senate. His political ascent included serving as the Senate majority whip in 2003, becoming the majority leader in 2010, and ultimately being elected Senate president in 2017.

Throughout his tenure, Ruggerio championed multiple initiatives aimed at reforming business regulations, implementing tax cuts, and developing the workforce. Notably, he played a significant role in advancing the legalization of sports betting in Rhode Island starting in 2018. In 2022, he spearheaded legislation mandating the state’s transition to 100% renewable energy by 2033, illustrating his commitment to sustainable practices.

Additionally, Ruggerio was key in introducing measures to combat the opioid epidemic, for which he received recognition from the American Cancer Society due to his efforts in enhancing public health initiatives. His advocacy extended to gun safety measures, including the promotion of strict storage requirements and the prohibition of high-capacity magazines. While he held conservative views on abortion, he supported the need for legislative discourse among Senate members on the topic.

His efforts also focused on improving cancer screening access and led to his induction into the Rhode Island Cancer Caucus in 2022. Some legislative highlights from his extensive career included the establishment of the Interstate 195 Redevelopment District Commission and the RhodeWorks Law aimed at infrastructure funding. Additionally, he was proactive in efforts to ban single-use plastic bags statewide and to replace lead water pipes across Rhode Island.

Legacy and Funeral Arrangements

Ruggerio’s leadership style was marked by approachability and a dedication to addressing the concerns of both colleagues and constituents. Even while battling health challenges, he continued to be actively engaged in legislative matters. His updates on his condition often reflected his ongoing commitment to his role as a senator.

Following his death, funeral arrangements were made for calling hours on Sunday at Maceroni Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial scheduled for Monday at St. Anthony Church in North Providence. Survived by his two children, Charles and Amanda, four grandchildren, and his sister, Lisa Aceto, Ruggerio leaves a lasting legacy in Rhode Island’s political landscape.
