Born on December 5, 1932, in Providence, RI, Boitano was the son of John and Ida (Barchi) Boitano. He grew up in the Elmhurst neighborhood alongside five siblings: John (married to Phyllis), Joan Petrone (married to Al), Barbara Rouse, Robert, and Peter. He was predeceased by his wife, M. Patricia (DiSarro), with whom he shared a loving marriage lasting 51 years until her passing in 2011.
Boitano is survived by four children: George, John (married to Roxane Teboul-Boitano), Anthony, and Margaret (married to Robert Maddestra Jr.). He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Maïa Cooper (married to Clay), Ren Kelly, Delphine Boitano, and George F. Boitano, and recently welcomed three great-grandchildren—Weston James, Theodore, and Caroline Cooper—within the past three years.
Education and Career
A proud alumnus of Mt. Pleasant High School, he gained recognition as a talented football player known as “The Mount Pleasant Flash.” Following high school, he attended the University of Rhode Island (URI) for his undergraduate degree and later obtained a master’s degree from Rhode Island College.
Boitano dedicated over 30 years of his life to education as a physical education teacher at Nelson Street Elementary School, George West Middle School, and Classical High School. He met his future wife, Pat, during his time at Nelson Street School, and the couple built a life together rooted in family values and community service. After retiring from teaching, he became a licensed physical therapist assistant, reflecting his commitment to helping others.
Passions and Community Engagement
Aman of many interests, Boitano maintained a zest for life throughout his years, regularly exercising and taking on new challenges, such as learning to ice skate at 45 and sailing at 55. He enjoyed sailing on Narragansett Bay with his Catalina sloop named Genesis, often joined by family and friends.
Boitano served honorably in the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant, demonstrating his commitment to service. A devout Catholic, he was actively involved in church activities as a long-time parishioner at St. Augustine Church and later at Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea. His dedication extended beyond the church; he volunteered at Amos House and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Additionally, he dabbled in entrepreneurship, operating amusement park games, managing concessions at the Providence Civic Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium, and running vending machines across Rhode Island. Through these ventures, he fostered family togetherness, creating lasting memories for his loved ones.

Boitano is remembered as a cheerful, hopeful individual deeply devoted to his family, living a life filled with gratitude and grace. Funeral arrangements have been made for a service on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 9:45 am at Nardolillo Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea. Burial, with Military Honors, will occur at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter. Visiting hours are scheduled for Tuesday from 4-7 pm.
