Providence Animal Center Supports Dogs Displaced by Hurricane Helene

News Summary

The Providence Animal Center (PAC) is assisting dogs displaced by Hurricane Helene by accepting 21 dogs and puppies from a Georgian shelter affected by the storm. The intake effort aims to create space for displaced animals and facilitate their adoption after a mandatory quarantine. Furthermore, local shelters and the Pennsylvania SPCA are coordinating efforts to support affected communities, while volunteers are transporting supplies across states impacted by the hurricane. This initiative emphasizes the importance of local animal shelters in aiding recovery and ensuring the well-being of animals during crises.

Media, Pennsylvania – The Providence Animal Center (PAC) is stepping up efforts to assist dogs displaced by Hurricane Helene by accepting 21 dogs and puppies from a Georgian shelter that was impacted by the storm. These animals were already without homes prior to the hurricane and arrived at PAC on October 6, 2023. The intake is aimed at freeing up space in shelters located in storm-affected areas, allowing them to accommodate animals who have become displaced as a result of the natural disaster.

Victoria Bernosky, Chief Operations Officer at PAC, emphasized the necessity of creating this space so that pets can be reunited with their owners. The Pennsylvania state regulations require these dogs to undergo a 14-day quarantine before they are eligible for adoption. This procedure ensures that all incoming animals are healthy and safe for interaction with the public.

In addition to PAC, the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Main Line Animal Rescue has also joined the relief efforts by accepting nine dogs from the Johnson City Animal Shelter in Tennessee. These dogs arrived at the rescue’s Phoenixville location on October 4 and are currently undergoing mandatory medical evaluations and quarantine protocols.

The need for fostering and adopting animals is on the rise as local shelters aim to support their partners in the areas severely affected by Hurricane Helene. PAC is encouraging members of the public to consider adopting or fostering both the newly arrived hurricane dogs and other animals already in the shelter.

Beyond animal shelters, local businesses and residents in Delaware County have been actively gathering and transporting supplies for hurricane relief. These efforts extend to providing vital food and other necessary supplies to communities across multiple states impacted by the storm, including Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Volunteers, including pilots based in Chester County, have been flying in supplies to assist hard-hit areas in North Carolina.

Moreover, NJ Task Force One is currently on the ground in North Carolina, aiding recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The collective efforts of local shelters, businesses, and community members are part of a larger initiative focusing on supporting those in need during times of crisis.

Local shelters like PAC and the Pennsylvania SPCA are working tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of the rescued animals. Their primary goal is to create an environment conducive to reuniting pets with their families as affected communities strive to recover from the hurricane’s devastation.

As the situation unfolds, the role of local animal shelters becomes increasingly crucial. By offering shelter, medical care, and a chance for adoption, they are making essential contributions to the efforts surrounding Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, proving once again that communities can come together to support each other in times of need.
