At DelSesto Middle School, a remarkable 92% of students come from underrepresented groups in STEM fields, while 39% are multilingual learners. The URI graduate students actively embraced suggestions to include multilingual learners in discussions, thereby fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
Interactive Learning and Field Trips
The curriculum designed by the graduate students included lessons on vital ocean science topics, such as the influence of salt, wind, and uneven heating on ocean currents. In addition to classroom learning, students participated in an enriching field trip to URI’s Bay Campus where they toured facilities, visited laboratories, and interacted with professors who specialize in marine sciences.
During the field trip, students engaged with a marine research aquarium and experienced a water pressure experiment first-hand. They also took part in a unique activity where they decorated Styrofoam cups, which were later used in a research vessel experiment designed to illustrate the effects of ocean pressure. This not only solidified their understanding of the concepts taught in class but also allowed them to partake in a real scientific investigation.
Program Impact and Future Goals
The program is set to culminate with a presentation at a science symposium scheduled for June 17 at the Providence Public School District’s central office. This event aims to showcase the knowledge and skills the students have gained throughout the program. It is also a step towards inspiring similar partnerships between public schools and URI in various other Providence schools, potentially broadening the impact of interactive science education across the district.
