Born in Providence, Lavine was a lifelong resident of the state. He received his education at Boston University before embarking on a successful career as a serial entrepreneur. Lavine notably led Globe Distribution, which became one of the nation’s largest auto parts distributors. He later took on the role of Chairman & CEO of The Freeman Group, Ltd., further solidifying his influence within the regional business community. His mentorship was key to shaping the careers of many in Rhode Island’s business landscape.
Outside of his business endeavors, Lavine played a pivotal role in the state’s governance as the Director of Administration under Governor Bruce Sundlun. His leadership was instrumental in helping Rhode Island navigate a transformative period. Additionally, Lavine chaired the Rhode Island Solid Waste Management Corporation, where his impact was also felt strongly.
Lavine’s commitment to education and leadership extended to his involvement with Roger Williams University, where he served on the Board of Trustees and held various positions, including treasurer and co-chair of the presidential search committee. In recognition of his contributions, the university awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Business Management in 2009 and named the Lavine Family Lobby at the Gabelli School of Business in honor of his family’s generosity. He was also the recipient of the University’s inaugural President’s Medallion of Honor for his lifelong dedication.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Lavine was deeply embedded in the Jewish community, playing a central role at Temple Emanu-El in Providence. He served as Endowment Chair Emeritus and was actively involved in numerous congregational initiatives alongside his wife, Barbara. His philanthropic efforts extended to The Miriam Hospital Foundation, where he held the title of Life Governor.
Jerrold Lavine is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara (Showstack) Lavine, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. The couple had four children: Jeffrey (and Jennifer), Jonathan (and Jeannie), Marc (and Lori), and Elisa Buchsbaum (and Gordon). He treasured the time spent with his nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, known for his engaging stories and encouragement.
Lavine’s funeral service will take place on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:00 am at Temple Emanu-El, located at 99 Taft Avenue, Providence, RI. Following the service, burial will occur at Sharon Memorial Park in Sharon, MA.
The family will observe Shiva after the burial on Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon at Temple Emanu-El. Shiva will also be held on Saturday night at the Lavine Residence in Providence and at Jeffrey’s home in Scarsdale, NY, from Monday through Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lavine Torah Tutor Fund at Temple Emanu-El or the Lavine Scholarship Fund at Roger Williams University. Arrangements for the services are being handled by Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel in Providence.
