Emma is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia A. (McGurn) Emma, and their son John J. Emma, Jr.. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of the late John A. and Concetta (Croce) Emma. Throughout his life, he maintained strong ties to both family and the community, actively participating in various social clubs, including the 828 Club, where he served as treasurer.

Musical Career

John Emma’s passion for music began in the late 1950s when he joined the band The Blue Jays, playing with them from 1957 until 1970. The group transitioned to White Water from 1971 to 1976, during which time they made significant contributions to the local music scene. Notably, the band operated The Spectrum night club in Pawtucket until their retirement in 1976. Later, they purchased The Lighthouse Night Club in Old Orchard, Maine, running it until 1994.

In 1971, White Water recorded at RCA Recording Studio in California, releasing the album Out of the Darkness, a highlight of Emma’s musical legacy. The band also had the opportunity to perform in concert in New York City in 1970, sharing the stage with renowned acts such as Jefferson Airplane and Ten Wheel Drive.

Personal Life and Achievements

Beyond music, Emma was an accomplished athlete. He was selected for the All-State varsity baseball team as a center fielder while attending Central High School and played football as a wide receiver for the Charles Street Team. After high school, Emma enlisted in the Army, where he attained a boxing title for his unit.

In addition to his musical and athletic endeavors, Emma was known for his sharp sense of style and cheerful demeanor. His life’s mantra was to “worry about nothing,” a testament to his optimistic outlook despite recent health challenges that led him to seek solitude.

Emma’s entrepreneurial spirit shone through when he and Patricia owned and operated Flowers by Patricia from 1974 until their retirement in 2005. His dedication to family, business, and music created a life full of purpose and connection.

Final Arrangements

Visitation for John J. Emma, Sr. will be held on September 4, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Pontarelli-Marino Funeral Home in Providence. His funeral service will take place the following day, starting at 9:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Church in North Providence. A graveside burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hope Health Hospice or the St. Anthony Memorial Fund, reflecting Emma’s enduring impact on those around him and his commitment to community service.
