The Miss Rhode Island Day of Portugal pageant is set to take place on Sunday, May 18, at Clube Juventude Lusitana in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Eight talented contestants will compete for three prestigious titles: Miss Juvenile Day of Portugal RI, Miss Junior Day of Portugal RI, and Miss Senior Day of Portugal RI.
Three contestants are vying for the title of Miss Senior Day of Portugal RI: Mollie Pimental, 24, representing Galito Restaurant; Angelina Santos, 21, from Accurate Auto Center; and Jennaeve Pimentel, 20, representing Rosa’s Tavern. In the Miss Junior Day of Portugal RI category, Victoria Teles, 11, will compete as Miss Priority Automotive, and Natália Marques, 13, is representing Clube Juventude Lusitana. For the Miss Juvenile Day of Portugal RI title, the contenders include Caylee Sampaio, 7, representing Escola Portuguesa do Clube Juventude Lusitana; Camila Heaney, 8, as Miss Stitches de Saudade; and Beatriz Emidio, 9, representing Rancho Danças e Cantares de Clube Juventude Lusitana.
The event is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and tickets will be available for purchase at the door for $25. The contestants will be evaluated based on their presentation, talent, and understanding of Portuguese culture, ensuring that the event celebrates both beauty and cultural heritage.
The pageant was established in 1982 with the objective of promoting Portuguese heritage, building self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem among young women in the community. Since 2018, Suzette Vieira Marques has directed the pageant. In addition to her role as director, she works as a registered nurse manager in New England and has prior pageant experience, having been crowned Mrs. East Providence in 2013.
Judging will take place on the day of the event, with the identities of the judges kept a secret until the pageant begins. The judging panel will consist of five notable individuals from various parts of the northeast, ensuring a diverse and fair evaluation of the contestants’ performances. The choreography for the event is being directed by Catarina Liebe, a U.S. Air Force veteran and the CEO of a cheerleading gym located in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Liebe herself was crowned Miss Day of Portugal RI in 2017, demonstrating her commitment to cultural representation and community engagement.
