Providence, RI – Morrisa “Rissy” Basseches Zwetchkenbaum passed away on October 8, 2025, at her home in Wingate Residence, just one day before what would have been her 70th wedding anniversary with her husband, Joseph Zwetchkenbaum. At 92 years old, she is remembered for her dedication to family, community service, and a vibrant lifestyle that inspired many.

Born on August 26, 1933, in Washington, DC, Rissy was the only child of Dr. Charles Basseches and Rose (Yeager) Basseches. She pursued her education at Mount Vernon Seminary and later graduated from Wheaton College. Shortly after her college graduation in 1955, Rissy married Joseph Zwetchkenbaum, embarking on a journey that would last nearly seven decades.

Rissy’s journey through life was marked by her strong commitment to family. She was a devoted mother to four children, giving birth within five years and balancing a loving yet firm approach to parenting. Rissy also actively participated in her community; for over four decades, she volunteered weekly at Miriam Hospital and was the president of the Miriam Hospital Women’s Association.

Rissy was a longstanding member of Temple Beth-El, where she fostered a sense of community for more than 60 years. Her social engagement extended into her leisure pursuits as well; she was an avid golfer, holding membership at Ledgemont Country Club where she continued to play well into her 90s. In addition to golf, Rissy enjoyed a daily three-mile walk on Blackstone Boulevard with her late friend Starr Najarian, reflecting her strong belief in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Family gatherings were particularly special to Rissy, as she often hosted holiday meals and organized winter visits to Palm Beach, Florida. She is survived by her children: Rebecca Z Segal (Valerie Shulock), Marc Zwetchkenbaum (Linne Kimball), Dr. John Zwetchkenbaum (Kimberly Chazan Zwetchkenbaum), and Dr. Samuel Zwetchkenbaum (Deborah Carr). Rissy’s legacy also includes her nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.

Rissy was well known for her warmth, hospitality, and genuine interest in the lives of others. Friends and family alike will remember her caring nature and ability to connect with those around her. After her passing, a funeral service was held on October 10, 2025, at Temple Beth-El, followed by her burial at Swan Point Cemetery. Shiva services were scheduled at the homes of her children in the following days, allowing family and friends to gather and celebrate her life.

For those wishing to honor Rissy’s memory, donations can be made to the Miriam Hospital Foundation or Temple Beth-El. Rissy’s life serves as a reminder of the importance of family, community service, and a healthy, active lifestyle, values that she exemplified throughout her 92 years.
