Providence – Two local artists, Carol Beagan and Catherine McKinnon, are marking a significant milestone as they celebrate 50 years of friendship with their upcoming exhibition entitled “Landscape Meditations.” The event takes place at the Providence Art Club, located at 2 Thomas St, from May 12 to May 29, 2025. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 18, from 2-4 p.m., allowing art enthusiasts and the community to meet the artists and experience their work firsthand.

Beagan, who resides in North Scituate, and McKinnon from Pawtucket, have created their exhibition with a focus on capturing the beauty of New England landscapes. Their art is primarily inspired by painting outdoors, known as en plein air, as well as through their own photographs taken during various excursions. The exhibit features a collection of oil paintings that reflect the pair’s favorite locations and the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Both artists have made significant contributions to the field of education, particularly as art teachers at Charles E. Shea High School in Pawtucket. Their long-standing careers in education have shaped their artistic journeys and have informed their creative practices. While McKinnon has since retired, serving her last profession as a realtor at Residential Properties in the Cumberland office, Beagan founded Paintbox Preschool in Cumberland, where she directed the school for 14 years. Their shared commitment to the arts extends beyond their personal practices, influencing generations of students.

The Providence Art Club offers its gallery to the public during weekdays from noon to 4 p.m. and on weekends from 2-4 p.m., providing an opportunity for the community to appreciate the works of local artists. “Landscape Meditations” not only celebrates the friendship of Beagan and McKinnon but also showcases their unique perspectives and talents through a collection that aims to evoke reflection and appreciation of the natural environment.

The exhibition is particularly relevant in today’s art landscape, where local artists strive to connect with their communities through their work. By highlighting New England’s scenic views, Beagan and McKinnon invite viewers to experience the region’s charm and beauty. This exhibit stands as a testament to their enduring friendship and their mutual love for art, which has been nurtured over five decades.

As the two artists prepare for their show, they reinforce the importance of not only creating art but also sharing it within the community. With the journey that began 50 years ago now culminating in this exhibition, their bond as friends and collaborators has yielded a creative output that exemplifies the rich artistic traditions of their region. “Landscape Meditations” is set to be a heartfelt celebration of both friendship and artistry.
