North Kingstown – A 38-year-old man, Gary Hutley, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon during a traffic stop in North Kingstown, in relation to a larceny warrant. The warrant, issued by the Rhode Island State Police, was linked to an ongoing case that originated with the East Providence Police Department.

Hutley was taken into custody shortly before 2:45 p.m. on Route 138. Following his arrest, he was processed at the Rhode Island State Police-Wickford Barracks and subsequently transferred to the East Providence Police Department for further investigative procedures.

Earlier that morning, the North Kingstown Police were dispatched to a report of a breaking and entering incident at the Five Below store located on Gate Road. Officers arriving at the scene discovered a front window had been smashed and a cash register was stolen. Witnesses indicated seeing an individual drive away from the location in a black SUV.

As police began their investigation, they identified a vehicle similar to the description of the suspect’s SUV on Post Road. However, during an attempted traffic stop, the vehicle fled from the officers. Later, the black SUV was discovered crashed into an AMTRAK building at 912 Ten Rod Road, but the occupants had fled the scene, leaving the vehicle unoccupied. The crash resulted in damage to an electrical guidewire, causing power outages in the affected area.

During a search of the vicinity, officers from the Rhode Island State Police encountered a male individual who refused to identify himself or answer police inquiries. This individual was subsequently arrested for obstruction and taken to the North Kingstown Police Department.

In addition to the attempted break-in at Five Below, police reported that three other businesses were also targeted during the early hours of Tuesday morning. These included:

  • Yorktown Market – 6769 Post Road
  • Smoxy Smoke Shop – 6172 Post Road
  • Kingstown Mobile Gas Station – 6228 Post Road

The investigation into the breaking and entering incidents is being led by the North Smithfield Police Department, which is working closely with local law enforcement agencies.
