News Summary

North Providence has introduced a new school bus safety initiative aimed at preventing illegal passing of stopped buses. In partnership with BusPatrol, the program uses AI-supported cameras on buses to enhance safety during student pick-up and drop-off times. An alarming frequency of violations in the area has prompted this initiative, which aims to educate and penalize reckless driving. Starting May 2025, fines will be imposed for violators, with additional measures in place to ensure accountability and promote compliance within the community.

North Providence has initiated a new school bus safety program aimed at reducing the number of drivers illegally passing stopped buses. In collaboration with BusPatrol, the North Providence school district will equip all its buses with cameras supported by artificial intelligence technology. This program is designed to enhance the safety of students during crucial pick-up and drop-off times.

Currently, an alarming average of 48 to 52 drivers are caught each week passing school buses illegally in North Providence. As part of the launch, there is a warning period in effect throughout April 2025, during which drivers will not face penalties for their actions. However, beginning May 1, 2025, fines will be imposed, with civil penalties ranging from $250 to $500 for individuals found guilty of this violation. Under Rhode Island law, drivers may also face the possibility of a maximum 30-day suspension of their driver’s license.

In a related effort in Cumberland, another community employing similar technology found that 47 drivers received citations in just the first three months of their program. This illustrates the effectiveness of such initiatives in deterring reckless driving around school buses.

Each year in the United States, over 45 million motorists are reported to have illegally passed a stopped school bus, putting countless children at risk. To reinforce education and compliance, the North Providence program has begun issuing warning letters to drivers caught on camera after April 1. Statistics show that 90% of first-time violators do not repeat the offense, reflecting the potential effectiveness of educational measures.

The cameras installed on the buses capture critical footage, including the vehicle type, license plate number, and the bus’s extended stop-arm. This footage will be reviewed by law enforcement officials to confirm any violations before fines are issued. If a vehicle owner receives a violation notice and wishes to contest it, they must appear in person at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal. Research indicates that over 90% of violators opt to pay the fines without contesting, demonstrating a trend in compliance following such incidents.

If the registered owner of a vehicle was not the driver at the time of the infraction, they can request a transfer of liability through the North Providence Police Department. This ensures that responsibility can be accurately assigned and encourages accountability within the community.

The overarching goal of this school bus safety initiative is to improve road safety and lower the instances of reckless driving around school buses, thereby creating a safer environment for children. With the implementation of advanced technology and educational efforts, North Providence aims to significantly reduce the dangers faced by students during critical travel times.

As the program moves forward, community members and local officials stress the importance of compliance, as the safety of young students is a paramount concern. With ongoing support from the community and effective enforcement of the new measures, North Providence is taking a proactive step towards ensuring the protection of its school children during their commutes.
