Emergency responders at the scene of the plane crash in Simi Valley.
A small plane crash in Simi Valley resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and a pet. The Vans RV-10 aircraft crashed into a residential property, prompting emergency responses and investigations. Eyewitnesses described horrific scenes as the plane spiraled down, with firefighters working swiftly to contain the aftermath. The community mourns the loss, while authorities investigate the crash’s circumstances.
On Saturday afternoon, a small plane mishap rocked the tranquil community of Simi Valley, resulting in the heart-wrenching loss of two individuals and a beloved dog. This unexpected incident took place just before 2 p.m. on the 200 block of High Meadow Street, in the Wood Ranch area, where families were going about their daily routines.
The aircraft involved in the crash was identified as a Vans RV-10, a popular fixed-wing single-engine plane that is often home-built, with many flying enthusiasts assembling it from a kit. The plane had taken off from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was headed toward Camarillo Airport when something went terribly wrong.
Initially, it was thought that only the pilot was on board, but authorities later confirmed that two people and a dog were indeed passengers on this tragic flight. While the identities of those lost in the crash have not yet been revealed, the impact of their loss hangs heavily over the community.
The descent of the plane turned catastrophic as it struck the backyard and dining room of a home owned by Arman and Armineh Hovakemian. At the time, Arman was busy with yard work when he noticed the aircraft circling lower and lower, ultimately leading to the fateful crash. Wasting no time, he dashed inside to alert his wife, just moments before an enormous explosion rocked their home as the fuselage landed where he had been. The force of the crash ignited a fire near their living space, prompting them to evacuate while nearby neighbors sprang into action, calling 911.
Fortunately, despite the devastation, both Arman and Armineh escaped unharmed. Their house sustained damage, and neighbors quickly rallied to help. Another home belonging to P.J. Van Kralingen and his wife was also hit, but sadly they were not home at the time. Their two dogs managed to escape, but the couple is currently searching for their missing pets.
Firefighters from the Ventura County Fire Department responded in full force, with about 40 firefighters on the scene to contain the flames and conduct an investigation into the crash. Despite the chaos, the fire crews managed to extinguish the flames and shifted their focus to overhaul and salvage operations.
Eyewitnesses described chilling scenes as they observed the plane flying incredibly low, turning sideways, and spiraling downward before the crash occurred. A Ring camera from the Hovakemians’ home captured the explosive impact and the ensuing flames. Firefighters faced the daunting task of cutting through the roof of the Hovakemian’s house to reach the fire ignited by the aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The NTSB will play a lead role in uncovering what went wrong, with updates expected in the coming days. Initial reports indicated no significant hazardous materials risk from the plane, but investigators will look into factors like visibility issues due to the misty weather conditions at the time of the crash.
As investigations continue, the Hovakemian’s home has been taped off, restricting access while authorities collect evidence and piece together the events of that fateful day. The growing impact of this tragedy is felt throughout the community, as residents come together, offering support to each other in these challenging times.
