Warwick, RI – The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency is set to host its third annual Preparedness Month Blood Drive this Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Warwick Mall. This important community event aims to encourage blood donation and raise awareness of emergency preparedness resources available to residents.

Alongside the blood donation effort, various organizations will set up informational booths at the venue, including the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, United Way 2-1-1, Rhode Island Department of Health, and Community Emergency Response Teams. These partners will provide vital safety and preparedness information to attendees, enhancing community awareness while supporting the Rhode Island Blood Center.

Blood donation is critical, as statistics show that someone in the United States requires blood every two seconds. This need underscores the significance of the blood drive. Donating blood not only has the potential to save lives but also ensures that hospitals maintain necessary supplies for emergencies, surgeries, and routine care. The current situation in hospitals is concerning, with blood supplies reported to be down nearly one-third, highlighting the urgent need for donations.

Oncology patients particularly benefit from blood transfusions during their treatment, as expressed by healthcare professionals in the field. As hospitals make requests for blood, confirmation of availability becomes critical, underscoring the role of blood donors in the healthcare system.

Donor recognition is a key part of the blood drive event. One donor will celebrate a significant milestone of achieving their 100th donation at the drive. At a recent NBC 10 Blood Drive, a total of 205 donations were collected, demonstrating strong community involvement. Additionally, high school students and institutions were acknowledged for their efforts in blood donation at the High School Hero Reception and Award Ceremony held on October 24. A total of 23 awards were distributed, recognizing various high schools for their contributions to the blood donation cause.

Among the honorees, Paul Cuffee High School, Johnston Senior High School, Coventry High School, and North Kingstown High School received first-place High School Hero Awards for their exemplary efforts. Furthermore, Monica Strojny, a teacher at William M. Davies Technical School, received the Gift of Life Award for her outstanding work as a blood drive coordinator.

In light of the community support expressed during these initiatives, the Executive Director of Blood Operations at the Rhode Island Blood Center praised the students for their efforts in maintaining a stable blood supply. Their work not only benefits the healthcare system but also inspires their peers to engage in community service and health awareness activities.

The third annual Preparedness Month Blood Drive at the Warwick Mall is an opportunity for residents to meet urgent needs while learning about important resources. Community involvement in such events is crucial for sustaining blood supplies that are vital for various medical situations. As the blood drive approaches, organizers hope to see a strong turnout from donors in the area to address the ongoing need for blood contributions.
