Providence, Rhode Island – The Providence College men’s golf team is set to return to varsity competition for the first time in 23 years, with their season officially kicking off on September 8, 2025, at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. This marks a significant milestone for the program, which has been inactive at the varsity level since 2002.

Head Coach Lou Parente announced the new roster for the team on July 23, 2025. The lineup consists of eight members, including three freshmen, three juniors, and two graduate transfers, representing a diverse mix of talent and experience aimed at reestablishing the program as competitive in collegiate golf.

The freshmen on the roster bring impressive credentials. Will Spring from Concord, Massachusetts, is a notable addition, having won the Cape Cod National Massachusetts High School Invitational in 2024 and earned three Dual County League All-Star honors. Callan Fahey from Wheaton, Illinois, enters the team after setting multiple records for conference points at Wheaton-Warrenville South High School and being named the 2023 Conference Player of the Year. Another freshman, Liam O’Grady from Louisville, Kentucky, is recognized for holding the scoring record at Louisville Collegiate School and was part of the Trinity High School’s 2024 State Championship runner-up team.

The junior contingent includes Joe Halferty from Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, who has experience competing for the Providence College club golf program, where he notably finished in the top five at the National Collegiate Club Golf Invitational Championship in 2024. Evan Buddenhagen from Gloucester, Massachusetts, transfers from Kennesaw State University, where he ranked 8th in the New England Amateur in 2024. Campbell Skelly from Charleston, South Carolina, previously played at Rollins College, achieving a top finish of tied for 16th at the 2025 Carolinian Amateur.

Two graduate students round out the team. Logan Jaeger from Basking Ridge, New Jersey, was a co-champion at the National Collegiate Club Golf Association Championship with the Providence club team in April 2024. Kevin Legnard from Bethel, Connecticut, played a leadership role as the president and captain of the club golf program and contributed to winning the National Collegiate Club Golf Invitational title in 2024. Together, they contribute both skill and leadership experience to the team.

The re-establishment of a varsity golf program at Providence College is a part of a broader strategy to build a solid foundation and competitive spirit within the athletics department. The college has actively engaged the community through several fundraising events held in May 2025, demonstrating strong support for the golf program and its goals.

As the team prepares for its first season, there is a palpable sense of excitement surrounding the return of men’s golf to varsity competition. Providence College is committed to fostering a competitive environment for its athletes and ensuring the men’s golf program thrives in its new chapter.

The last competitive match for the men’s golf team at Providence College as a varsity program took place in 2002. Since then, the college’s commitment toward revamping the athletic program reflects a substantial investment in student-athletes’ opportunities and experiences at the collegiate level.

This renewed focus on golf and other sports represents a positive step for both the college and its community, fostering school spirit and providing student-athletes with the tools and environment necessary to succeed on and off the course.
