A 23-year-old man, Angel Martinez, from Providence, Rhode Island, was arrested early Thursday morning in Madison, Connecticut, following allegations he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in Providence. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding gun safety and domestic violence.
The Providence Police Department received a report at 12:13 a.m.2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Shortly thereafter, at 1:55 a.m., the Connecticut State Police issued a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) alert for the suspect’s vehicle, described as a gray Jeep with Rhode Island license plates. Police were proactive in their response, quickly attempting to locate the vehicle to ensure the safety of the victim.
At approximately 1:57 a.m., a trooper spotted the suspect’s Jeep parked at a rest area along Interstate 95 South in Madison. Upon approach, officers found both Martinez and the alleged victim inside the vehicle. Immediate steps were taken to detain Martinez and assess the situation.
Following the arrest, law enforcement was informed by Martinez that there was a firearm located in a bag behind the front passenger seat. A thorough investigation revealed a loaded 9mm handgun within the bag, escalating the gravity of the charges against him. The victim was unharmed during the ordeal and was aware of the presence of the gun, although she could not specify its exact location in the vehicle.
Martinez was found to be in violation of gun laws, as he did not possess a valid permit for the firearm. Consequently, he has been charged with multiple offenses, including carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, and being a fugitive from justice. In the immediate aftermath of his arrest, Martinez was initially held on a $5,000 bond, which was later raised to $250,000 after Providence police obtained an extraditable felony arrest warrant.
Authorities indicated the possibility of additional charges against Martinez as they prepare for his extradition back to Rhode Island. Witnesses in the surrounding area reported hearing loud screams prior to the police arriving at the scene of the kidnapping incident. This alarming detail highlights the tensions that can occur in domestic situations and underscores the need for prompt police intervention.
The incident reflects ongoing concerns about domestic violence and the risks involved when firearms are present in such situations. There are significant implications for both the victim and the accused as they navigate the aftermath of this troubling act. The Providence Police Department stated their intention to fully pursue any additional charges that may arise from the ongoing investigation.
Investigations into the incident will seek to ensure justice for the victim while also addressing the broader issues of firearm regulation and domestic safety. The importance of community awareness and the vigilant reporting of suspicious or violent behavior cannot be understated in preventing similar situations in the future.
