Providence Man Convicted of Murdering Angel Rodriguez During Mother’s Day Party in 2023

Providence, Rhode Island—Luis Sepulveda, a 53-year-old man from Bronx, New York, has been found guilty of the murder of 44-year-old Angel Rodriguez. The verdict was delivered in Providence County Superior Court following a seven-day trial overseen by Justice Kristin Roberts.

Sepulveda was convicted on multiple charges related to the tragic incident, including:

  • One count of first-degree murder
  • One count of discharge of a firearm resulting in death
  • One count of carrying a pistol without a license
  • One count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person
  • One count of assault with a dangerous weapon
  • One count of using a firearm during a violent crime
  • One count of possessing a large capacity feeding device

The shooting took place on May 14, 2023, during a family Mother’s Day party on Manton Avenue in Providence. Earlier that day, Sepulveda and Rodriguez had engaged in an argument, but they managed to resolve their differences peacefully. However, the evening took a violent turn when a fight erupted in the garage of the home. During this altercation, Sepulveda retrieved a gun from his bag, fired two rounds into the air, and then shot Rodriguez in the chest.

Following the shooting, Sepulveda fled the scene in a grey minivan. Providence Police were called to the location around 11:00 p.m., where they found Rodriguez on the ground with a gunshot wound. Despite being administered CPR on-site, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital at 11:36 p.m.

Shortly after the incident, Rhode Island State Police apprehended Sepulveda’s vehicle on Route 95 South. A handgun was recovered from the driver’s door of Sepulveda’s vehicle. Investigators found five shell casings at the shooting scene, which were confirmed to have been fired from the firearm seized from Sepulveda’s car. A primer gunshot residue analysis revealed residue on Sepulveda’s hands, and DNA analysis showed his DNA on the firearm.

The prosecution of Sepulveda was led by Special Assistant Attorneys General Daniel C. Hopkins and Edward G. Mullaney, along with Detective Alicia Hersperger from the Providence Police Department. Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed concern over the ramifications of gun violence on families and communities, while Providence Police Colonel Oscar L. Perez Jr. reiterated the commitment to tackling gun violence within the community.

The specific date for Sepulveda’s sentencing has not yet been announced.
