Providence, Rhode Island – The Providence Public School District is gearing up to welcome thousands of students back to the classroom on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with new initiatives and improvements aimed at enhancing the educational experience. District leaders will celebrate the new school year and visit various locations, including the bus yard and multiple schools, to mark the occasion.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Paula Dillon has expressed enthusiasm for the start of the school year, emphasizing the commitment to providing excellent instruction in every classroom. She will be accompanied by Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green, Mayor Brett Smiley, and School Board President Ty’Relle Stephens as they visit Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, one of the district’s five redesign schools that focus on healthcare and finance careers.
Dr. Alvarez High School has established partnerships with the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), Rhode Island Nursing Education Centers (RINEC), and local financial institutions to offer career and technical education programs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to prepare students for successful careers directly from high school.
In addition, Spaziano Elementary School is undergoing a transformation into a PK-8 school, aiming to provide stability and continuity of education for students from Pre-K through 8th grade. The opening of 6th-grade classrooms aligns with the transition to the PK-8 model, fostering a sense of community and connection among families. Over the next few years, the district plans to open four new PK-8 schools that will feature modern facilities designed to enhance the learning environment.
Another focal point during the visits will be Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, recognized with a National Blue Ribbon Award for its academic excellence.
Despite the positive changes, the district continues to face challenges. As the 2025-2026 school year begins, more than 70 classrooms are still without a full-time teacher. However, this marks a significant improvement from previous years, with the number of vacancies decreasing from 104 on the first day of school last year to 71 this year. The majority of these vacancies are in high-need areas, including English as a Second Language (ESL), special education, math, and science.
Encouragingly, the Providence Public School District has seen a rise in the number of teachers in high-need subjects over the past five years, and the current vacancy rate represents the lowest figure seen in five years, showing progress compared to pre-takeover statistics.
To attract more educators to these critical areas, the district and the Providence Teachers Union have once again proposed a $10,000 base salary increase for new educators in specific high-need positions. Additionally, the “Grow Your Own” program is designed to assist teaching assistants in becoming certified teachers, further bolstering the teaching workforce.
The district is also committed to addressing the needs of its increasingly diverse student population. Efforts are underway to expand dual-language programming to accommodate the rising number of multilingual students, ensuring that all learners are supported in their educational journeys.
The Providence Public School District’s initiatives aim to enhance the quality of education, provide stability for students, and address the ongoing challenges associated with staffing. As the school year begins, the district remains focused on creating a positive and enriching environment for all students.
