Providence, Rhode Island, Remembers Nancy Gifford Roach
On a bittersweet day in January, the community of Providence, Rhode Island, is coming together to honor the memory of a truly remarkable individual. Nancy Gifford Roach, a beloved philanthropist, passed away on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, leaving behind a legacy filled with compassion, love, and a commitment to bettering her community.
A Life of Dedication and Service
Born on January 19th, 1932, Nancy spent her formative years in Barrington, Rhode Island. Remarkably, she was a direct descendant of John Alden, a famous passenger on the Mayflower. This connection to history earned her recognition as a Colonial Dame, highlighting her strong roots in the area.
Education was an important part of Nancy’s life. She graduated from Lincoln School in Providence in 1949 and was later honored with an Alumnae Citation Award for her unwavering commitment to education and the empowerment of young women. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Marjorie Webster Junior College, after which she began her career as an administrative assistant.
A Family Tragedy and Triumph
In 1955, Nancy married Donald A. Roach, a Naval officer stationed in Newport, Rhode Island. They would go on to raise a loving family of four children, spending a significant portion of their lives together in both Ann Arbor, Michigan and back in Rhode Island after 1971. Their family home was rich with love, as they created memories in cities like Providence and Barrington, while also enjoying a picturesque retreat in Woodstock, Vermont known as High Pastures Farm.
Nancy faced immense heartbreak with the loss of her husband, Don, in 2013 and their grandson Colin Antonovics in 2021. Yet, she remained a pillar of strength for her family, leaving behind her four children: Deborah (with husband Dennis Proffitt and grandson Christopher), Cindy (with husband Jeffrey Barger and grandchildren James, Michael, Scott, and Maggie), Donald (with wife Stacey and daughters Katie and Mallory), and Douglas (with wife Susan and children Daniel and Elizabeth). Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Jane Gifford Barrows, along with many extended family members.
A Legacy of Grace and Giving
Nancy was known in the community not just as a devoted mother and wife, but as a vibrant individual bursting with energy and enthusiasm for life. She loved activities like hiking, skiing, and traveling, always encouraging her family to step out and try new things. Besides her athletic pursuits, she enjoyed social activities such as yoga, golf, and tennis, and shared strong friendships with a close-knit group of women.
Throughout her life, Nancy was deeply involved in community and philanthropic efforts, often choosing to work behind the scenes. Her compassion and kindness were felt by everyone around her, and those who knew her remember her for embodying Rhode Island’s state motto, “Hope.”
Celebrating Nancy’s Life
The community is invited to celebrate Nancy Gifford Roach’s life with a memorial service on Friday, February 6th, at Central Congregational Church in Providence at 11:00 AM. Following the service, attendees are welcome to join a reception at the Hope Club, where stories and memories can be shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Nancy’s memory be made to Lincoln School or the Barrington Preservation Society, two organizations that resonated deeply with her philanthropic spirit.
As Providence mourns the loss of such a cherished figure, the impact of Nancy Gifford Roach’s life will undoubtedly live on through the many lives she touched and the communities she enriched.
