Providence – Police in Providence are currently investigating multiple weapon-related assault incidents that occurred over the weekend, raising concerns about public safety in the area. The incidents involved stabbings, brandishing of weapons, and a suspect fleeing from the police.
The most alarming incident took place early Sunday morning on Orms Street, where a man reportedly chased a group while wielding a machete. Police were dispatched to the 200 block of Orms Street at approximately 1:30 a.m. However, the suspect evaded police capture by running down Winsor Street and even threw an object at an approaching police cruiser, causing damage to a nearby metal chair.
The suspect has been described as a Black male with dreadlocks, wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans, and red sneakers. Following a police canvass of the area, he was last seen running on Smith Street near the local 7-Eleven. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this incident to contact them at (401) 272-3121.
Another significant incident involved a stabbing on Aldrich Avenue, where a 32-year-old man was arrested for stabbing a homeowner multiple times with a butcher knife. This altercation arose when the suspect attempted to enter the homeowner’s property and subsequently engaged in a dispute over collected aluminum cans.
During this ordeal, two nearby workers heard the commotion and intervened by restraining the suspect until police arrived, an action that likely saved the victim’s life. The stabbing victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. The suspect faces multiple charges, including felony assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest.
A separate incident unfolded at a Wendy’s drive-thru located at 731 Eddy Street around 4:05 a.m. on Sunday, where a disgruntled customer brandished a knife after discovering the restaurant was closed. The suspect reportedly climbed through the drive-thru window and confronted an employee while holding the knife before fleeing the scene.
Witness reports indicated that the suspect was accompanied by two other individuals in a black Hyundai, with one claiming to possess a firearm. This incident is under investigation as a felony assault with a dangerous weapon.
The string of violent incidents continued at the Providence Place Mall, where a 39-year-old male stabbed an 18-year-old male, resulting in a non-life-threatening laceration to the victim’s forearm. Both the suspect and the victim were apprehended by police, with the older suspect facing charges of felony assault, while the younger individual has been charged with simple assault.
The spate of violence over the weekend has led to increased police presence in the affected areas, and investigators are working diligently to ensure the safety of the community. The police are keeping the public informed and are actively seeking any additional information on these incidents to hold the responsible parties accountable.
As these investigations unfold, authorities are emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in reporting any suspicious activities to help prevent further violent incidents.
