Philadelphia, PA – Constantin (Costas) Toloudis, a respected professor and passionate gardener, passed away on October 17, 2025, at the age of 93. His death marked the end of a vibrant life dedicated to education, family, and a love for the arts.
Born on August 28, 1932, in Naoussa, Greece, a town situated just outside Thessaloniki, Toloudis spent his formative years there before serving in the Greek military. He eventually moved to Vancouver, BC, to pursue higher education at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Following his undergraduate studies, he attended graduate school at Rice University in Houston, where he earned a PhD and met his future wife, Miriam Wolf, whom he married on June 18, 1965.
After completing his doctorate, Toloudis became a professor of French at the University of Rhode Island. He and Miriam settled in Saunderstown, Rhode Island, where they raised their family. The couple welcomed their first son, Daniel, in 1972 and their second son, Nicholas, in 1977. Throughout his career, Toloudis emphasized the importance of education, fostering a deep appreciation for French culture and literature among his students.
Beyond academia, Toloudis led a rich personal life characterized by diverse interests. He was an enthusiastic gardener, cultivating a garden in Saunderstown that provided fresh vegetables for his family. His enthusiasm extended to photography, traveling, food, red wine, and the arts. He maintained a close-knit social circle, gathering nearly weekly with friends for card games, showcasing his cheerful and vibrant spirit.
In retirement, Toloudis and his wife pursued their passion for travel, taking annual trips to Greece and France, where they indulged in their love for culture and connection to their heritage. Through these experiences, they continued to enjoy life and explore the world together.
Following his passing, a private graveside service is scheduled to take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in North Kingstown, RI, where family members will pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Modern Language Association or The American Association of Teachers of French, organizations reflective of Toloudis’s lifelong commitment to education and language.
