Students protesting against program cuts at Rhode Island College

News Summary

Protests have erupted at Rhode Island College following the announcement of significant program cuts affecting over 20 academic programs. Students and faculty gathered to express their concerns, questioning the college administration’s decisions and the impact on educational diversity. The backlash includes the formation of the ‘Save Our Majors’ group, highlighting community discontent with the lack of consultation. As the college plans to implement ‘teach-out plans’ for affected students, calls for a re-evaluation of the cuts continue amidst broader concerns about inclusivity and workforce needs.

Protests Erupt in Providence Over Program Cuts at Rhode Island College

Providence, RI – Things are heating up at Rhode Island College (RIC) after the school announced that it will suspend more than 20 academic programs and consolidate another 15 starting in the fall of 2025. As students and faculty rally together, the future of education at RIC hangs in the balance, and the atmosphere is charged with concern and uncertainty.

A Community in Uproar

On April 10, RIC laid out its plans for significant program changes that have become a source of frustration for many in the college community. Just recently, around 50 passionate members took to the steps of the Rhode Island State House to express their strong opposition to the announced suspensions. This wave of protests follows an earlier rally held right on RIC’s campus, where students voiced similar concerns about the cuts.

Many affected students can breathe a sigh of relief, as those who are currently enrolled in the programs set for suspension are assured they will still be able to graduate as planned. RIC’s president has confirmed this in a letter, but it hasn’t stopped the outcry from students and faculty who feel left in the dark about these major changes.

Behind the Cuts

According to the RIC administration, these changes are part of a routine assessment process dictated by the state’s Academic Program Review Policy. This policy requires periodic evaluations of academic programs, and any that fail to meet certain graduation thresholds are subject to potential elimination.

To make these decisions, the college reviewed graduation rates for programs. Unfortunately, it seems that none of the programs in question managed to bring in more than 13 graduates between 2021 and 2024, leading to the tough cuts that many are now protesting against. Although the administration argues this is simply good fiscal management, many believe that there’s more to consider.

Voices for Change

Students have come together to form a new group called Save Our Majors, a testament to their dedication to preserving academic diversity at RIC. They are raising awareness that suspending these programs might contradict RIC’s mission of offering a broad array of educational opportunities. Students are leading the charge, questioning the lack of consultation before these big decisions were made.

The discontent doesn’t stop there. Faculty members, like the chair of the history department, have pointed out that enrollment at RIC has actually grown in recent years. They argue that if there’s no financial crisis, why are these cuts necessary? Concerns are also growing around the suspension of language programs, particularly those that serve Rhode Island’s sizable Portuguese-speaking community, which has become a focal point for ongoing protests.

The Future of Education

In response to the unrest, RIC plans to create “teach-out plans” to help students in the affected programs complete their degrees. While the administration claims that these changes aim to make the college more efficient and responsive to workforce needs, many within the community continue to push for a re-evaluation of the decision.

Community groups, including the Coalition for a Multilingual Rhode Island, have voiced their disapproval of the language program suspensions, viewing it as a move that undermines RIC’s commitment to cultural relevance and inclusivity. They see language education as vital for meeting workforce demands in today’s multilingual society.

In a broader context, the situation at RIC is part of a nationwide trend among colleges and universities grappling with fluctuating enrollment rates and financial pressures. As RIC commits to navigating these challenges, the voices within its community remind us that education should always be a collaborative effort.
