Rhode Island College Unveils New Cybersecurity Range

Rhode Island College cybersecurity training range with advanced simulation equipment.

News Summary

Rhode Island College opened a state-of-the-art cybersecurity range at the Institute for Cybersecurity & Emerging Technologies. This facility offers hands-on training in managing real-time cyberattack scenarios like malware and phishing attacks. With advanced technology such as IBM’s Cloud Range platform, the range prepares students for high-pressure situations in cybersecurity. The initiative, chaired by former Congressman Jim Langevin, responds to growing cybersecurity threats, enhancing education and collaboration opportunities with local organizations.

Rhode Island College has launched a new cybersecurity range at the Institute for Cybersecurity & Emerging Technologies, aimed at equipping students with hands-on experience in managing real-time cyberattack scenarios.

The state-of-the-art cyber range allows students to engage in various simulations, including malware attacks, phishing attempts, and advanced challenges like ransomware incidents. Douglas Alexander, the director of the cyber institute, underscored that professionals in the cybersecurity field often encounter tremendous pressure during such attacks, making this training essential for future experts.

Proudly opened in 2023, the Cybersecurity Institute is chaired by former Congressman Jim Langevin, who facilitates significant advancements in cybersecurity education in the region. The grand opening event was attended by Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee, who likened the facility to a “Star Wars” set due to its advanced technology and unique design.

The cyber range incorporates IBM’s Cloud Range platform, allowing for a coaching approach to training with varying difficulty levels from novice to advanced. It is designed to accommodate 24 students simultaneously across four workstations, each equipped with six computers and high-end Alienware peripherals. The centerpiece of the facility is a 24-foot-wide by 4-foot-tall video wall, which vividly visualizes the simulations of cyberattacks for enhanced learning experiences.

To ensure network security, the cyber range is isolated from the RIC network, preventing any potential spillover of malware during training exercises. Additionally, the range is available for use by external parties, including local companies, nonprofits, and government agencies seeking to enhance their cybersecurity training and procedures.

Limited use of the range by students has already begun, according to Lindsay Russell, a spokesperson for RIC’s cyber institute. A more comprehensive integration into the curriculum is anticipated by the next academic semester, allowing even more students to benefit from this innovative learning environment.

Currently situated on the first floor of Alger Hall, plans are in motion to relocate the cyber range to Whipple Hall following renovations funded by a $73 million bond approved by voters. This move aims to support the increase in demand for cybersecurity education in Rhode Island.

The importance of cybersecurity education is underscored by retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, who noted the growing threats from international actors aimed at U.S. infrastructure. Recent threats, such as those from the Volt Typhoon hacking group and a significant data breach affecting 650,000 residents in Rhode Island, exemplify the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity preparedness.

The cyber range not only reinforces technical skills through hands-on learning but also emphasizes teamwork and communication. Evaluations following simulation scenarios will assess participants on teamwork quality, communication effectiveness, and the ability to respond under pressure, all critical components in the field of cybersecurity.

With a commitment to preparing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, Rhode Island College’s new cyber range represents a significant step forward in addressing the pressing cybersecurity challenges faced today.
