News Summary
Recent arrests in Rhode Island, including individuals with gang ties, underscore a significant drug crisis in the state. Fabio Martinez and Rafael Rivera were apprehended for cocaine possession, revealing the extent of narcotics trafficking activities. These arrests are part of a broader crackdown on drug-related crimes following a prolonged investigation into gangs and their operations. The rise in drug-related activities has raised alarm among local law enforcement, prompting ongoing efforts to tackle this pressing issue.
Cranston, Rhode Island – Fabio Martinez, a 32-year-old resident of Cranston, was arrested on Thursday for possessing cocaine, according to the Rhode Island State Police. The arrest occurred as a result of a warrant issued out of Providence, highlighting ongoing concerns over drug-related activities in the region.
Martinez was apprehended without incident by officers from the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force while residing at his Pontiac Avenue home in Cranston. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the custody of the Providence Police Department. Specific details regarding the charges against Martinez or the circumstances of his arrest were not disclosed, as the Rhode Island State Police did not provide further information when contacted.
In a related development, Smithfield Police arrested Rafael Rivera, a 33-year-old man from Providence, during a traffic stop later that same Thursday. Rivera was reportedly found in possession of a staggering 38.5 kilograms of cocaine. The arrest occurred around 6:15 p.m. when a K-9 unit alerted officers to the presence of narcotics in his vehicle. Rivera has been charged with possession of a schedule I/II drug with intent to deliver for a third offense, as well as possession of cocaine exceeding 1 kilogram. A bail commissioner has determined that Rivera will be held without bail, with his arraignment scheduled for Friday in Kent County Court.
Martinez’s and Rivera’s arrests are part of a larger crackdown on drug trafficking and gang-related activities in Rhode Island. Recently, eleven individuals with confirmed gang affiliations were arrested as part of “Operation Brick House.” This extensive investigation spanned 21 months and was initiated following a shooting incident on Interstate 95 on October 21, 2023. The operation sought to dismantle a network involved in violent firearms offenses, narcotics trafficking, and various forms of fraud.
The arrests stemming from this operation followed two additional shootings that occurred in Pawtucket and Johnston, where gang members reportedly used GPS tracking devices to target victims. As part of the investigation, law enforcement executed a total of 130 search warrants, which resulted in significant drug seizures and various arrests. The ages of those arrested ranged from 23 to 43, with residences in several Rhode Island communities including Providence, North Providence, East Greenwich, Cranston, and East Providence.
Among the charges brought against the individuals arrested were possession with intent to deliver not only cocaine but also fentanyl, xylazine, and methamphetamine. A notable case involved a 21-year-old named Teddy Lopez, who was apprehended after a traffic stop revealed a concealed stash of 11 kilograms of cocaine, along with fentanyl, marijuana, and $1,700 in cash. Lopez was pulled over for driving without a seatbelt and subsequently had drugs discovered hidden in a compartment of his vehicle.
Cranston Police Colonel Michael Winquist pointed out that discovering such a substantial quantity of drugs during a routine traffic stop is decidedly rare. Lopez, a finance major at Providence College, notably does not have any prior criminal history. In response to Lopez’s arrest, Providence College expressed both surprise and disappointment, stating that they are currently reviewing the situation in accordance with their student conduct policies.
Lopez has also been held without bail, with a status conference set for April 3. The series of arrests across Rhode Island reflects a concerted effort by law enforcement to confront and combat the drug crisis affecting communities throughout the state.
