Rhode Island Life Science Hub Awards $3.9 Million for Business Expansion and Incubator Development
The Rhode Island Life Science Hub has awarded a total of $3.9 million to five companies for their relocation or business development initiatives within the state. This funding is part of a broader effort to enhance innovation in Rhode Island and promote it as a competitive hub for life sciences.
As part of the ongoing expansion in the state’s life science sector, Brown University is currently constructing the William A. and Ami Kuan Danoff Life Sciences Laboratories in Providence. The construction, which began in 2024, is expected to be completed by spring 2027. The new facility is set to cover an area of 300,000 square feet and will focus on important research areas such as aging, immunity, brain science, cancer, and biomedical engineering.
In a commitment to sustainability, the Danoff Laboratories will operate on 100% renewable electricity. Foundation work for the building is already complete, and construction is currently progressing with steel frameworks and concrete slabs being installed for each floor. The installation of the exterior façade is slated to commence in September.
Development of Rhode Island’s First Dedicated Incubator
Included in this project is Rhode Island’s first dedicated incubator for life science startups, which will be housed in the new health and science building. Under a non-binding agreement estimated at $10 million, the incubator will feature a 30,000 square foot wet and dry lab specifically designed for biomedicine startups.
To support this initiative, Brown University has committed to an investment of $13 million over the next ten years, along with plans to sublease space for the incubator. The Rhode Island Life Science Hub is contributing $9 million from its $45 million state budget for the development and construction of the incubator, with an additional $1 million coming from the I-195 District Commission.
Background on the Life Science Hub
The Rhode Island Life Science Hub was established with initial funding of $45 million from the state to foster economic growth within the life science sector. The Hub has seen significant achievements under the leadership of its chairman, Neil Steinberg, who has announced his resignation effective September 30, 2025, to focus on family and personal priorities. During his tenure, the Hub successfully secured a $10 million deal for Ocean State Labs and organized a substantial summit to promote the state’s life science initiatives.
The incubator is anticipated to start operations by late 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening Rhode Island’s status in the life science field. The strategic development efforts reflect a commitment to not only enhancing research facilities but also providing critical support to early-stage companies in the life sciences.
As the construction progresses and the Life Science Hub continues to attract innovative companies, Rhode Island is poised to become a leading destination for research and development in the life sciences sector.
