A police bike in Providence highlighting law enforcement presence in the community.
A man known as Keveon Gomera appeared in court this week after allegedly stealing a police mountain bike while handcuffed in Rhode Island. Gomera, who has a history of violent behavior and assault, resisted arrest in a restaurant and was previously arrested for public drunkenness. His past includes vandalism and assault against security personnel. After his court appearance, he was released on bond but must return to court in Washington D.C. This incident has raised local concerns regarding public safety amidst his criminal background.
A man accused of stealing a Washington, D.C., police bike while handcuffed made an appearance in a Rhode Island courtroom this week. The man is initially identified as Ricardo Encarnacion, but court proceedings revealed he has a different name: Keveon Gomera. Gomera faces multiple charges, including those linked to his history of violence and assault.
Gomera was arrested in Rhode Island after failing to attend a scheduled hearing in Washington, D.C., stemming from an April 2024 incident where he was initially taken into custody for public drinking. According to federal court records, after being handcuffed, he allegedly pushed a police officer aside and stole a police mountain bike.
The situation escalated when Gomera reportedly entered a restaurant and climbed onto the rooftop, where he resisted arrest. During this confrontation, he allegedly struck, kicked, and headbutted law enforcement officers attempting to detain him.
During the court appearance in Providence, Gomera’s lawyer confirmed his true identity, revealing the name discrepancy. Rhode Island court records indicate that Gomera has a troubled history, including previous assault charges. Earlier this year, he pleaded no contest to assaulting a staff member at Rhode Island College and was subsequently sentenced to a year of probation.
Furthermore, records show that Gomera has a record of offenses including resisting arrest and grave desecration. Notably, he was involved in a vandalism incident at a Providence College cemetery where he painted swastikas on gravestones and assaulted a security guard during that incident.
The warrant issued from Washington, D.C., for Encarnacion lists his last known address as the same as that associated with Gomera, establishing a direct link between the two names. This has complicated his legal standing as authorities seek to clarify his identity and previous actions while addressing the theft of the police bike.
Following his courtroom appearance, Gomera was released on bond but is required to appear at a court hearing in Washington D.C. later this week. The case remains ongoing as officials continue to evaluate his prior record and the recent allegations against him.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents about public safety, especially with Gomera’s history involving violence and vandalism. As law enforcement agencies address the ramifications of such actions, they continue to emphasize the importance of accountability and maintaining order within the community.
Gomera’s upcoming court appearances will be closely monitored, as they will determine the next steps in his legal battles in both Rhode Island and Washington, D.C.
