Central Falls, Rhode Island – More than 10,000 residents of Rhode Island experienced significant power outages on Monday morning, as severe thunderstorms affected various parts of the state. As of 11:30 a.m., data from the Rhode Island Energy outage map indicated that 10,345 customers were without power. However, this number declined sharply to just 10 customers later that same day.
The most heavily impacted areas included Central Falls and Valley Falls, where the concentration of power outages was the highest. Despite the improvements in the number of outages throughout the day, the situation had raised concerns among residents and officials alike regarding the responsiveness of Rhode Island Energy.
The thunderstorm that led to these widespread outages occurred on the evening of July 3. Following this event, Rhode Island Energy’s outage map initially malfunctioned on July 4, showing no outages even though many residents reported being affected. By approximately 9 a.m. on July 4, the outage map was restored but indicated that over 50,000 customers were without power. Later clarifications from Rhode Island Energy adjusted that figure to around 37,000, yet issues persisted throughout the day with the outage map going offline again by early afternoon.
In addition to the technical difficulties with the outage map, there were also reports that the text message notification system, which provides individual updates on outages, was not functioning properly. This further complicated the ability of residents to receive timely information about the status of their electricity.
In light of the outages and the accompanying communication breakdown, Governor Dan McKee expressed his dissatisfaction with Rhode Island Energy’s response to the storms. He criticized their communication efforts and the technical issues that arose during the storm recovery, labeling them as unacceptable. The governor has directed his team to conduct a thorough review of the systems in place at Rhode Island Energy to address these issues before future storms.
To aid in power restoration efforts, over 100 additional crews were mobilized to assist with the repairs and restoration of service across the affected areas. This substantial increase in manpower aimed to expedite the return of electricity to customers and minimize the disruption caused by the storms.
