Storm clouds and lightning over Rhode Island indicating extreme weather

News Summary

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory and flood watch for Rhode Island due to extreme weather conditions. With temperatures expected to reach up to 92 degrees and heat index values soaring to 100, residents are urged to take precautions. A flood watch is also in effect due to potential heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding. The advisory is expected to last into the evening, as thunderstorms may bring substantial rainfall in a short period. Residents should monitor local forecasts and remain vigilant against both heat and flooding risks.

Providence, Rhode Island

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory and a flood watch for Rhode Island on July 8, 2025, as the state braces for extreme weather conditions. The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with heat index values expected to soar up to 100 degrees. High temperatures are projected to reach 92 degrees in some areas.

Residents are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses due to high heat and humidity levels. Recommendations include drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors in air-conditioned environments, avoiding direct sun exposure, and checking on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.

In addition to the heat advisory, a flood watch is effective from 2 p.m. EDT on July 8 until late night. This watch encompasses areas in Rhode Island as well as parts of Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts. The NWS indicates that expected rainfall from showers and thunderstorms could result in localized flash flooding, particularly in urban areas where drainage systems may be inadequate.

Risk of Flash Flooding

Strong thunderstorms are predicted later in the afternoon and into the evening, with some locations potentially receiving rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in less than an hour. The NWS stresses the necessity of monitoring weather forecasts throughout the day and being vigilant for possible flash flood warnings, as the risk is heightened in areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall is forecasted to continue into Wednesday, July 9, with a possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, along with patchy fog in the morning. The adverse weather comes after a previous heat advisory that indicated rising temperatures, with earlier reports showing the temperature in Providence at 76 degrees with 88% humidity at 6:51 a.m. on July 8.

Ongoing Weather Patterns

This current weather situation reflects a broader pattern of unsettled conditions expected to persist through much of the upcoming week. While the immediate forecast indicates high temperatures and potential flooding, cooler temperatures are anticipated towards the end of the week.

Residents of Rhode Island should remain alert and prepared for these extreme weather conditions, as both heat and flooding can pose significant health and safety risks. Proper planning and adherence to safety tips can help mitigate the impact of these weather events.
